Do you have a dog? Do you know about the Modern Family episode?

You know, the episode where there’s a smoke alarm going off somewhere in their house because the battery is dying. I’m finding more and more people who can tell the same story I can about their dog going nuts when that episode is on. I had no idea what was going on when it happened, it was just more TV background noise to me, but Blackjack was suddenly desperate to get out of the house, forced his way through the gate outside and it took me quite a while to coax him back in. Maybe it’s just me and a couple of other people so tell me if you’ve encountered this.

I had forgotten about that episode but yes, I absolutely remember it. My dog was very upset and I did not appreciate it.

I ended up watching the episode on mute with closed captioning.

Our dogs didn’t seem to mind. We’ve seen that episode a couple of times, and never noticed any reaction.

Yes. My standard poodle does not like smoke detectors and freaked out every time there was a beep in that episode.

My Bichon was unfazed. But fireworks and thunder don’t bother him either.

Yup - it’s how I figured out she has a little bit of PTSD from her earlier life with a family who had her on an invisible fence (the collar would beep when she got near - and she had a pretty strong drive to get out a lot). :frowning:

This is what I was going to say.

my dogs go nuts any time there is the noise of a doorbell on TV and one of them is afraid of the smoke alarm needs-battery noise so I assume she would react to the show.

had I seen it.

I have also not seen it, which makes me one of those people that comments on threads that have little to do with them. :stuck_out_tongue: However, since all dog owners want to hear any dog story they can, I will add this:

My dogs were unfamiliar with the concept of a doorbell until I moved into my new house a year ago. Now they react to any doorbell, IRL or on TV. However, they do not react to any other TV noise, even if it’s something that would rile them up if it were happening in front of them. Other dogs barking, vacuums, people knocking, no reaction, as long as it’s on the television.

My older dog has lived through “which effing smoke detector is beeping?” several times. He has never even seemed to notice other than to look bewildered as we run around the house and listen intently in every room.
