Do You Have Servants?

No, I do not have a servant. My husband’s grandparents do. As for those who worry about having a stranger in their house, when someone lives with you for an extended period of time, he ceases to become a stranger. The grandparents’ servant is pretty much a fixture of family life and always has been. He lives there, he cooks (and sometimes he and Grandma cook together), he cleans, he organizes everything - man, that guy has a lot of power in the house. He’s more like an event planner or a manager than someone who is always ordered around. If you need shit done, you go to Romeo.

Personally I wonder how anyone could stand to be a servant. I would not enjoy living in another person’s house. But I guess some people are made for that kind of lifestyle, and well-compensated.

We’ve got a lawn service. I don’t think that qualifies, since it’s a business providing a service rather than an employee.

In Oman we had a full-time cook and a full-time maid. That was nice; Jaya (the cook) made lemon-parsley sole fillets to die for.

Why, *Shagnasty! * I had no idea you had a mammy!

You may think it is a horrible thing to say but I did in fact. Lola was just like Mammy even in appearance. She raised from a baby all the way through early college and I still visited her as an adult. She died two years ago in her 90’s and I cried my eyes out. I love you and miss you Lola.

Yes. I have two children, but alas one has found alternative employment.

I’m sorry for your loss, Shagnasty.

And since my previous answer wasn’t very serious, I have a bi-weekly cleaning lady and lawn serivce.

First, you didn’t tell US if you had servants. Second, you keep starting new topics and never reply to them, it seems. Stick to the ones you have open already, kiddo.

You have an entire drawer full of lube?

It’s possible to have household staff and consider them “fully human”, regardless of what you keep in your drawers.

In answer to the OP’s question: yes.

We have a cleaning lady who comes in every other week. She used to have helpers so it was more like a contracting business but now she’s solo, so I guess she might qualify. Though I think of “servant” as more of an every day kind of thing.

We used to have a nanny for the kids. That might qualify (though she was never live-in).

I wouldn’t call them servants, and I too wonder what Curtis’ motivation is for starting this thread, although that’s also nothing new, but my wife and I have a number of people who perform various tasks for us. We’re both in the medical field and work 8 to 12 hour days, sometimes 7 days a week. I also travel a lot. So anything we can do to reduce personal, non work-related burdens is worth the expense.

We have…

  • Someone who cleans the house once a week
  • A crew that manages our lawn and landscaping every other week, except mowing, which is weekly
  • Someone who does our grocery shopping twice a week (don’t knock it til you’ve tried it)
  • An accountant, pretty much once a quarter

Makes it easier to get at during business time. Just open drawer and stick your hand in!

You’ll probably have to replace that furniture sometime, though. Unless the drawer has a plastic liner or some such…

My students occasionally clean my whiteboards for me. Though they usually volunteer so I guess that doesn’t count.

I apologize for this post. I left my browser open when I ran out for a moment and my manservant posted the reply. :frowning:

It is so hard to get good help.

I am dictating this post to my personal secretary.

I think “household staff” is the more modern term.
