Inspired by this thread about someone asking to read your diary, I’m curious. How many people this days keep a private diary/journal? For poll purposes, the question is if you currently keep one. Feel free to mention if you used to in comments.
I started one when I was young, but was too lazy to keep it up. I only lasted a few weeks, to be honest.
When my sister got married, I wrote up a little four-page diary of the events – the travel, the dinners, whom I met, the décor, etc.
What’s fascinating to me, reading it now, twenty years later, is that I actually remember almost none of it. So…I kind of wish I had kept a diary all my life, because it would be full of stuff I have no memory of, today.
I’ve got a diary that I’m writing for my children. It’s full of stories about when I was pregnant with them, when they were born, what their family was like, anecdotes about what they said and did, etc. I don’t write in it nearly as often as I’d like to (once a year went by without me writing in it), but I want them to have something like that in my “voice.”
I don’t know why - possibly because I’m a huge fan of reading and was an author for a long time. Plus, the art of writing things down seems to be going away. I don’t want them to read my bog or something when I’m dead. I want them to have something they can hold.
What leads you to believe that you’ll reside in a bog? Most of those peat bog figures were victims of nefarious deeds.
Not since my teens and that was 40 years ago. I’m not sure I would want to read the angsty and probably vapid stuff I was going on about back then.
Bahahahah. Blog, darnit.
Good grief, it’s been a long day.
I voted “no” because my daily log is not private at all. I’d let all of you read it if you wanted to. It would be good bed time reading, you’d be bored to sleep in no time at all.
I do it because its handy to be able to look back and see just when I had this cat fixed or that cat got blood work. I also record the daily weather with high and low temps. Its rather depressing to see how much things changed during that time.
I did for a short while in my early teens. One night after taking a hit of acid, I wrote in it. I drew a graph and made some comments.
It went something like this:
10p.m. - took it. (!!!)
10:40p.m - I think I’m feeling it.
Midnight - Wow. This is groovy.
2 a.m. - I think something is outside of my window. (I lived on the 15th floor)
4a.m. - I feel sick. I may never need to eat again.
6a.m. - good god make it stop!!!
For some reason, I ripped that page out of my diary. My dad found it. Enough said; I stopped writing in my diary.
Ha! I just remembered something else from that diary entry. I wrote “I’m peaking” numerous times. Each time thinking…"OK, now I’m really peaking.
I just started. The first entry is dated May 23, 2014. I’ll answer the poll in a week.
Previous attempts have run aground on the fact that if no one is reading it but me, no one knows whether I’m keeping it up but me, and I’m no good at being hard on myself. At least not in the sense that’s useful for this.
Yes, I do. I did this several times when I was a child/teenager but never last more than a few weeks into any new year.
I started this one on 1 January 2014 for reasons which escape me now. I think I just liked the look of the diary when I was buying a magazine from the news agency. I bought it and have written in it daily.
Not since I was an adolescent.
(I am no longer the Center Of The Universe. Who knew?)
I did for a while as a teen but I had a nosy sister who would find it and ans rat on me.
Several times I started to but what made me give it up was when my great aunt’s mother died. Her family found her diary and were shocked to find out that that sweet, prim and proper, older lady was anything but.
Nope, my secrets are going to the grave with me.
