Do You Know Syracuse/Warners Area?

We’re considering a Syracuse Holiday Inn Express - Fairgrounds (6946 Winchell Road, Warners, New York). Is there anything bad about this area? The price per night is suspiciously low. Should I avoid?

I grew up about an hour away and I’ve driven through that area several times, as recently as a year or two ago. It’s an industrial area not very close to most of the attractions of Syracuse (such as they are). There is nothing within walking distance that you’d want to visit, except maybe one sports bar that I’ve never heard of before but looks like it might be halfway decent. It’s very close to the Thruway, less than a thousand feet, so traffic noise may be an issue. It’s about 9 miles from downtown and not even all that close to the actual location of the New York State Fairgrounds, which is about 4 miles away.

Also, the hotel is a little over a mile away from Onondaga Lake. The lake can be kind of pretty to look at from certain vantage points, but it’s also one of the most polluted lakes in the country and sometimes it stinks, especially in summer. I don’t really know how far from the lake you have to be to avoid the stench, but I’ve experienced it up close, and it was powerfully bad.

I am not from the Syracuse area but there is a pretty decent zoo in Syracuse. If you like that sort of thing.

Hey, all thanks! We’re just using this as a launching point to go explore some other areas. I’ll keep all you share in mind.

Huh. Good to know. I’m now glad I’ve never gotten up close to it. I do remember passing by it on the way to visit family in Nedrow, back when there was an industrial waste pipe reaching over the highway and releasing water directly into the lake, but back then it was not the kind of place you were tempted to stop and linger at for the beauty.
