I would say my first thought when someone mentions her name to me is no longer anything related to her Olympic career. I think it’s two fold, one that career was a long time ago, and she faded completely out of the national consciousness for decades, and two is that her second act has almost nothing to do with her Olympic career. And I guess three the somewhat obvious psychological aspect–I fully know Bruce Jenner was the name she went by as a man, and she has since transitioned and almost everyone respectfully uses her current name instead, but a side effect of this is if you lived through Bruce Jenner the Olympic athlete, it doesn’t trigger your memory the same way to hear the name Caitlin Jenner, just not how the mind works.
My progression of knowledge about Caitlin Jenner was hearing that (still Bruce) Jenner, who had been active on a reality TV show featuring the Kardashians (a show I never watched but vaguely knew existed), had come out as trans and was transitioning to a woman. I remember it then got some play on ESPN and other things of that nature with Jenner winning an ESPY Award. Then I feel like Jenner kept “in the news” to some low level ever since, and all of it was so far divorced from her previous life as an Olympian decades ago that it kind of overwrote her previous public profile.
