She’s about as mythical as Betsey Ross, why should we know or care who she is?
Sure, old man Pitcher’s wife.
I couldn’t give exact details but I had the general idea of who she was. I am originally from the Midwest but after age 7 I ended up in Florida so I guess that counts as East Coast, however I still entered where I was originally from for the poll.
No, she’s not. *Betsy *Ross, while a real name of a real woman, didn’t do what her legend said. Mary Ludwig Hayes really was a woman helped fire a cannon at Monmouth, having been a fetcher of water for the artillery (both for the men and to keep the cannon cool). A British shot passed between her legs putting a hole in her skirt during the battle. She was given a pension for her service. “Molly” was a real nickname for Mary, and she was probably actually called Molly.
"Since various Molly Pitcher tales grew in the telling, many historians regard Molly Pitcher as folklore rather than history, or suggest that Molly Pitcher may be a composite image inspired by the actions of a number of real women."
I invite anybody to read the linked wikipedia article and decide if the single quote provided by Dr. Deth captures the spirit of that article, or is cherry-picking.
You should know who Mary Ludwig Hays was and what she did.
But we weren’t asked about Mary Ludwig Hays. We were asked about Molly Pitcher. Yes, no doubt Mary is part of the Molly Pitcher legend, but it’s still folklore, even tho based partly upon a real person.
I’ve heard of her. Probably could have told you about her at one time. Don’t remember a thing, though. Off to wikipedia.
Yup, I heard about her in school in California…but that was 50+ years ago.
Thanks for all the replies! Very interesting spread of responses.
And my apologies to anyone who felt geographically abused by the poll options. I was just trying to keep it longitudinal.
