even though the ingredients are diverse, they all seem (to my mind) to be catering for similar tastes, am I right?
Are there any others you’d like to add to the list?
That’d be yes, yes, yes, yes and yes. Colour me plebian.
As an aside, Marmite ran a successful ad campaign in the UK showing a series of people accidentally tasting marmite (say they re-used a knife which had spread some on toast) and making it abundantly clear that they hated it (mock barfing, pulling faces, having to drink a pint of water etc). The ad-line was ‘you either love it or you hate it’. I thought it was a pretty cool series of ads, and quite daring - showing a whole bunch of people having an adverse reaction to your product… [/end hijack]
The Marmite anti-ad campaign series was/is sheer brilliance; there was one where they are doing taste tests outside a supermarket and some customers kept sneaking back for another go, while others were running away screaming, actively pursued by smiling, helpful women saying ‘go on - try it’, IIRC the ad ends with a massive fight and people stamping marmite on toast into the tarmac.
The other one that sticks in my mind is:
Girl and boy return to her flat for ‘coffee’ - a little smooching on the sofa, then she goes to make the drinks, while the kettle boils she munches on a bagle topped with marmite, then she returns, they kiss and he pushes her away and coughs/splutters/retches.
It was/is very clever indeed - we’re still talking about both the ads and the product! I’d be a marmite soldier man every other night if it wasn’t for the fact that my wife would divorce me immediately. She has enough trouble coming to terms with the fact that I’ve got a soft spot for Heinz tomato ketchup. (And it has to be Heinz).
Vegemite - Mmmmm. Love this stuff!
Bovril - Never heard of it
Worcester sauce - Okay in small doses
Soy sauce - I like this too
Oyster sauce - Okay in small doses
Soy sauce is the only one of those I like. Forget Kikkoman; the Pearl River Bridge brand, imported from China, is the best. Avoid La Choy products at all costs.
Tried Vegemite once. Could take it or leave it. As for Worcestershire, Bovril, & oyster, I’m vegetarian, so those are ruled out.
No wosrcestershire sauce for vegetarians? Odd, I wasn’t aware of anything in there that a vegetarian would find objectionable, after all it’s mostly soy sauce.
As for soy sauce, the best I’ve found was a brand called Silver Swan (IIRC). That was the only one I’ve seen which contained traces of alcohol.
Marmite/Vegemite/Yeast exteact=never tried
Bovril=love it! makes every soup beefy
Worcester sauce=nope
Soy sauce=yep, I use too much of this stuff
Oyster sauce=nope
Marmite/Vegemite – never heard of them before here
Bovril – beats me, never heard of it either
Worcester sauce – It’s OK shrug
Soy sauce – yum
Oyster sauce – yum
Yup, you can buy vegan Worcestershire sauce that doesn’t contain anchovies. Sorry, I can’t remember the brand.
Isn’t it weird how vegan’s won’t eat honey?
