I tried Marmite

Last week the English dude at work was talking about Marmite, trying to describe the taste… when he called it a “savoury spread”, it woke up the part of my brain that likes coffee, guinness, cheese, natto, sausage, etc. So I immediately got obsessed with it and had to get my own. Finally got my own 125g jar of marmite, and the timeline is like this:

00:00:30 Opened jar and took a whiff. Hmm, just like they say, like cheese and shoe polish. I begin to salivate.
00:02:00 Toast is up. I spread it very thinly, as suggested. I take a bite. More than anything I get the salty taste. There’s also the shoe-polish note as well, but inside the mouth it has this intriguing finish.
00:04:00 I spread it on more thickly. Now I’m salivating heavily and it feels like my taste buds are almost humming. I’m getting that sharp cheese note they were talking about. Yes, this is definitely what I was hoping for. I’m a Marmite fan.
00:10:00 I’ve had a couple slices of bread, thickly coated with Marmite. It’s good, but I’m getting bored. I must be building up a tolerance to it. Can I mix it with something to enhance the effect?
00:15:00 Internet suggests trying it with cheese or eggs. I spread a thick coat of marmite on bread and a nice chunk of goat brie that happened to be in the fridge and take a bite. Oh god. It leaps directly to the reward center of my brain and says “you’ve done great laddie, now just do that a hundred more times and we’ll be solid gold.” It’s like cheese squared. It’s like crack, but with vitamins.
00:50:00 My 125g jar of marmite is more than half consumed. Some of it ended up on my hands and face and I can’t stop sniffing myself. I may spread it on the floor and roll around in it like a dog. I love the way the aftertaste lingers.

So, to sum it up, chalk me up solidly in the marmite lovers camp, and put me down for what is shaping up to be an expensive habit…

ulp :frowning:

I can get the same product at the hardware store. It’s called spackling compound.

You lost me at natto.

Heck, I was lost at “guinness”. And “cheese”.

:: shudder ::

Welcome to the dark side.
Try it with Avocado - I didn’t like it, but friends have raved, it may work for you.
Bacon, tomato, cheese and marmite - mmmmm. On a toastie MMMMMMMM!
Marmite, cheese and onion scones or roll-ups. Warm is better, cold is fine for packed lunches.
I know what I’m buying for lunch now.

I like marmite. I rank it ahead of vegemite by a whisker, actually.

But right now I’m out of it. I’ve got to get some more.

I’ve got lots of vegemite, and also some promite somewhere.

But I still needs me more marmite.

The 500 gram jar is a better deal.

Oh, and I don’t care nearly so much for the kiwi version. Sorry guys, but it’s english marmite for me.

Stop it this minute.

I can’t get Marmite where I am and cold turkey is setting in.

Promite?!! You mean there’s more than two kinds of these things lurking about?

The dark, sticky side.

Try it in cheese on toast - wholemeal toast, thin layer of marmite, slice of cheddar, under the grill. With melted cheese, it’s truly more than the sum of its parts.

It sounds like some kind of explosive.

I like a slice of sourdough bread, with a little butter, a little marmite, some thinly sliced 5 year old cheddar, some sundried tomato bits (packed in oil kind) under the broiler for about 90 seconds or so. Yummy.

I like natto, and I think vegemite and marmite are slightly different formulations of demon smegma.

Savory, eh? I might have to find some of this stuff.

Imagine a spread made from salty beef drippings, and you’ll be in the same ballpark as marmite (and vegemite).

Detonite
Or worse!

Catamite

That actually sounds quite heavenly!

What is it made of? Purely vegetarian type ingredients? Or are there actual delishous beef drippings in it?

Yeast extract. wiki.

The Marmite/Vegemite condiment wars were legendary when I was a kid, your preference could end friendships. Never heard of Promite and never tried the English Marmite (wouldn’t/couldn’t be as good.)

A friend of mine reckons the english Nutella is better than the Kiwi brand too, but hell, she likes Vegemite, so what could she know!

can’t take it anymore, runs out to the corner coffee shop for a slice of cheesecake

Mmmm. I have most of a jar of Marmite in the back of my cupboard. Good stuff. (Although I like Vegemite because it’s less likely to drip off the knife.)

There are a few. The minor brands are uncommon and usually try to emulate the taste of either Vegemite or Marmite. Promite is a quite unique taste - I really don’t like it at all though.

I was raised on Vegemite and I love the stuff as the ultimate comfort food. I usually have a little blood in my vegemitestream. I haven’t tried English Marmite yet, but I’m keen to. NZ Marmite is sweet. I don’t like it.
