1st wife was from Oz and turned me on to Vegemite. Then I found the real old stuff. The shit will kill a man, but I loves me some Marmite and toast.
ack ack ack! tried vegemite sent to me by a friend in australia. i spread it very thinly on toast, as instructed. i have to say i was not impressed with the look of it but i had promised to try it. the second impression was the odd odor coming off my toast, smelled a bit like motor grease of some kind, but a promise is a promise. i took a small nibble. urmmmmmm no, this is not something i will enjoy. i took another bite and that is when the gagging began. good lord that is some bad stuff ack ack ack. picture tom hanks in big when he tastes caviar!
i gave the toast to the dog. weird thing, 2 weeks later the dog was dead. coincidence? i think not.
My roomates had some and just recently finished it off.
I personally avoided it.
I’ve tried Marmite, Vegemite and Promite. I could eat them all but I do prefer Vegemite but only the thinnest of scrapings on the toast.
I like vegemite all right, but I think I actually prefer marmite.
(Don’t anyone tell Qadgop.)
Since this is basically a poll, I’ll move it to In My Humble Opinion for you.

My dad loves it. Us kids go running. Ever since his exursion to England some years back he swears by the stuff. Oh, and mom goes ick too.
I have managed to acquire a taste (even a craving) for Marmite, but it was a slow transition. I wouldn’t have been so persistent except I sell the stuff, and my supplier sends me samples from time to time. Vegemite I still find vaguely annoying, but I’m working on it. (How I’m ever going to finish the jar of pickled walnuts though, I don’t know.)
Love it. Warm toast, butter and Marmite. If in the mood, I’ll eat a whole loaf of bread. this really is something: coming from a cheese-eater
Like Vegemite. Like Marmite better. I like it on crackers with butter. I especially liked it when I was in Australia. Found some of the stuff here (in the states) and I just didn’t eat it.
One of the reasons I like it is because it’s so bad! It’s like cranberry juice - straight cranberry juice, no sugar added… damn! Something about the bitterness, it’s like you just know that you shouldn’t be enjoying this.
Logan.
Love the stuff, but I was born and raised in England so I don’t know if I count. I prefer Vegemite, but it’s much easier to get one’s knife into a Marmite jar because vegemite comes in those narrow narrow jar/bottle thingies.
Like Vegemite on toast, don’t mind marmite either although don’t eat it very much. However, when I was in England last July, I discovered the joys of marmite flavoured crisps. Heaven.
Ok with black pudding. Quite like haggis actually. Marmite? Blaaaaaahhhhhh! Ick.
Falling in love with a Brit is not easy :>
One more vote for Marmite - Food of the Gods! But what do you expect from a Brit…
Vegimite really does not cut it for me - a pale imitation IMHO. And nice observation about the jars Really Not All That Bright- the curvey Marmite one is just so much more elegant than the stubby straight sided aussie-fodder jars. Especially in the monster 500g sized ones!
Marmite on toast with a poached egg on top, yum!
I’m surprised anyone out side the UK knows what Marmite is.
How about:
Twiglets?
Marmite - yum!
I’m Australian and I don’t like Vegemite. There, I said it.
(I’m being forced to flee the country because of this short-coming. :()
I gave my Irish wife the first taste for free. Now she’s got a Marmite monkey on her back.
For the non-British Marmite lovers there was (is?) a great self-depreciatory TV ad campaign they ran with the buy line “Marmite - You either love it or you hate it”.
One featured a chap opening his lunchbox on a parkbench taking pity on a tramp looking on with a whistful expression on his face so he gives him his lunch and walks off. Shot follows the chap as a loud cry of “urggh!!!” is heard and a marmite sandwich, with a bite taken out of it, hits him a blow on the back of the head. Q buy line.
Well it always made me chuckle anyway.
Not all marmites are created equal.
I have to get my marmite from NZ (I’m living in the UK).
UK marmite is similar to Aussie vegemite.
NZ marmite is blacker and stronger (like our rugby team).
Yum.
And now I can have my marmite on Vogels bread (not the original, Sunflower and Barley)
Yum
I gotta go eat now
Simon
I keep looking at the Marmite at the Fresh Market near me, and I keep debating whether to give it a try.
I only worry because if I don’t like it, it’s kind of expensive - I think it was around $5 US for a small jar.
But I keep debating it. So, apparently, if I do buy it I should toast some bread, butter it (lots of butter or just a little? Softened butter so it all melts into the bread right off?) and put a very thin spreading of Marmite over that? Is this correct or not?
