I guess I’m behind the times. The people at Fark.com are literally lighting this guy up about sucking, being unoriginal, and et cetera and so on.
I’ve always liked Lenny Kravitz. I don’t think he puts out music that makes the heavens open and the world unite as one, but I think he’s a pretty catchy dude with a lot of obvious talent.
Am I alone here? Do I need to turn in my music street cred license?
I can’t really comment on your credibility as mine is probably similar due to being an unabashed fan of Michelle Branch and the Monkees but, no, I don’t particularly care for Lenny Kravitz.
I like his cover of American Woman and think he’s an incredibly sexy man but I’m not a fan by any stretch of the imagination and would most likely change the radio station if any song of his other than the one previously stated one were to come on.
I don’t like him. I was okay with Are You Gonna Go My Way and that was all I knew about him. But then I saw him live some years back. It was awful. During the first song, it was clear that his guitar wasn’t on- he banged it into the mic stand and there was no sound. The rest was blase music and irritating showmanship. I don’t know how much impact the show really had on my dislike for him. It was annoying but forgettable, and that’s the same thing I’d say for all of his songs since. Fly Away? Blech. American Woman? Eww. Et cetera.
He’s a llittle full of himself, but if that were enough to condemn one, the bones of any number of rockers would be rotting off their crucifixes by now.
Around 1975, a certain wonderful strain of raw funk more or less magically disappeared from American pop music.
Kravitz lives in an alternate reallity where this thankfully didn’t happen.
Lenny sucks. His most popular and well known songs are remakes. Like someone smarter than me once said about Sean Combs, “He takes a hit song, then makes it into a hit”.
I used to like him a lot, and I liked his album 5. I agree that his style is one long missed, and I definitely like the obvious Hendrix (best rocker ever IMO) influence. I’ve outgrown him, though, and while I respect his musical style, I don’t go out of my way to listen to him. If he has something new on the radio I’ll listen to it, but he’s just too derivative for my taste these days.
I’ll note here as a heterosexual male that he is a highly attractive individual.
Eh…he’s okay, at best. I didn’t mind “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” Nice catchy tune, good beat. Great chord progression. But his cover of “American Woman”? Pass the bucket. He just managed to suck out all the soul of that song. His version sounds very robotic, with overly glossy production, and it just plain doesn’t rock. Terrible cover. Simply terrible.
I like most of his singles, but I’ve never bought an album of his. I have to give him major props for being one of the few artists who can really pull off the whole I-play-the-guitar-bass-AND-drums thing.
He’s not one of my favorites but I do like him. I’ve purchased two of his CDs, and his single hits “Mama Said”, “Are You Gonna Go Way” and “American Woman” are my favorites.
