Do you like plantains?

That’s the question.

Yes.

That’s the answer.

Don’t know. Never had 'em.

That’s another answer. Only one answer left.

I love them fried, when they’re ripe and sweet and banana-y. With sour cream.

When they’re unripe and starchy and bland they’re no good.

I chose "It largely depends on how they’re cooked" but it really depends more on how ripe they are.

I love them. We used to sell pop bottles for enough money to buy them when we were kids.

Wait til they look like they’re rotten, then slice and fry in a little olive oil. Yummy.

I chose “depends on how they’re cooked”. Tostones are the food of the gods. Any other way and I’m pretty nonchalant about them.

Amen!

May I tempt you?

Tostones are ok. I can take 'em or leave 'em, about like fries. I love maduros (sweet plaintains). Unfortunately, the place near my house sometimes cooks them when they’re underripe, and then they are gross.

OTOH, there’s a cuban place near work where they make a sandwhich of sliced roast pork, fresh sliced onions and ultraripe sweet maduros. drooool

Heck yeah, sweet plantains are awesome.

Tostones are good only if they’re paired with something good (like ceviche).

Love them in every way possible. Tostones, maduras, mofongo, canoas, alcapurrias, pasteles, you name it.

They’ve been a staple in my diet pretty much since birth .

Love them every possible way they can be made.

I’ve only had them a handful of times, but when I have they’ve always been quite tasty. I’d eat them more often if I knew what to do with them besides “fry 'em”.

I’m with many others. I love the sweet plantains that are somewhat soft and gooey and really sweet. I am not a fan of the plantain chip version.

Lived in Miami, and so love the sweet plantains. When I went to the Cuban cafeteria to get food, I had to figure out that the maduros version was the one that I liked because nobody there spoke English. A bit of pointing and my rudimentary Spanish skills got me the right food. Good times. I think the people working there appreciated my efforts a bit. Everyone gracious.

I love maduros but HATE plantains. Unless they are fried chips in a bag with salt. My husband loves them, especially cut thick, mashed down a bit and then fried. With mushed and lightly sauteed garlic-- the way we Puerto Ricans eat them. Even though he’s not Puerto Rican. I think he married me for the plantains and pasteles.

In general I like 'em okay.

But I tell you, Sol Food in San Rafael CA does an absolutely killer Camarones Empanizados - deep-fried prawns breaded with ground up green plantains. Now that dish I love.

Plantains have their place. You can’t make a jibarito without them, and what kind of a world would that be?

Had them for supper tonight.

Mmmmmm… the plaintain chips are crack…and when my college’s latino student assocation held their dinner, I’d always be there and eating the plaintains and eating the sugarcane.
