Do you like ST:DS9?

(this might be for IMHO, move if necesary)

Basically DS9 has too appealing pluses for me

  1. The characters have a great deal of color, and seem to be a little darker then the goody-two-shoes of ST:TNG. I am interested in them in many ways moreso then ST:TNG’s.

  2. The series is less episodic, and more of a saga. The saga is furthered by being able to tie into ST:TNG episodes. Characters move forward; plots/wars move forward. In ST:TNG the characters are interesting, yet more static.

Flaws:
3) At times the acting comes across as trite to me. Sisko can be too… commanding at times. It feels even more artificial when every single second is backed up with music dictating how we should react. Many times the combination of too much sappy music and not enough good acting makes me roll my eyes.

  1. The dialogue sucks a lot of the time. I dont know what happened to ST:TNG’s writers. This just makes it harder for the actors to act and makes it cheezier amongst the constant “emotional” music that tells us how to feel.

Because of 1&2 ST:DS9 is more like a space soap opera and less classic trek. However, it can be cheezy and overdramatic with dialogue thats really hard to buy into. I have to say I like it though. It draws me in a lot of the time. I just accept that the series cant be perfect, but its pretty good for a follow up to TNG.

DS9 is easily the best thing to ever bear the label Star Trek. (Well, except maybe Wrath of Khan). It’s still a pale shadow of Babylon 5, but it’s still more believable than TOS, more interesting than TNG, and… well, it’s everything that Voyager and Enterprise were not. Specifically, it was watchable.

You might find this thread a good read.

To answer your question though, yes, I love DS9. It’s the best series of the franchise, owing to it being more of an epic with tons of supporting characters rather than a bunch of episodic shows with only the same seven people week after week.

That, and the Daxes are hot.

Maybe because he’s the commander? Really it’s 1,000 times better then any past trek “number 1 could you pretty please with sugar on top do your job” one of the reasons I loved Firefly so much is that captain laid down the law.

Frankly the more DS9 borrowed from Babylon 5 the better the show got. What was lame was the softening of Quark and the Gem (ho dar?) I’d like some races in Trek to be just mean and not misunderstood.

It’s Jem’ Hadar. Not trying to nitpick… just being helpful.

I personally liked the characterization of both the Ferengi and the Jem’ Hadar. It gave them a multifaceted culture, something you don’t often get with Trek. It also did wonders for the Bajorans, the Cardassians, the Vorta, and the Founders themselves.

I loved that they fleshed out these civilazations to the point that they did… I just wish they’d do it with the Romulans as well.

It had it’s good episodes, and even it’s great episodes. However, I found quite a bit of them to be “mediocre” episodes.

And the latter seasons just turned into “Sgt. Sisko’s Amazing War Stories; featuring WORF!” This was made worse by the glaring shortcomings in Federation military technology. (If it wasn’t a deal-breaker, it was still one HELL of a distration.)

And I found the Bajoran religion incredibly annoying. I mean, how different are the “Prophets” from Vaal?

Later seasons always had a…“rushed” feeling to them, too. Like they were trying to cram too much in, without a lot of time or support.

And the uniforms looked like puke. The ones from the first season on, and the later movie-inspired uniforms.

So…all around, it wasn’t terrible, but it could have been better.

Aesiron,

thank you. I didn’t have the vaguest notion of how to spell that.

As for the races I didn’t like it. (though I no doubt missed several episodes) it turned into one of those “they aren’t really bad just misunderstood. Hugs all around” that goes on in Trek. They can’t stand to have a bad guy. Every one they introduce goes this way Klingons, Romulans, Ferangi, heck they even turned Q into a prankster. I’m not saying I enjoy one dimensional evil characters (like in my aforementioned Firefly I though the Reavers were stupid thankfully they didn’t play much of a part) but it is possible to have a race with a functional society that isn’t sweet and cuddly under the top layer (and one that doesn’t secretly want to adopt human values). The Founders came pretty close but I missed several of the last episodes. Did they get the same treatment or did they stay pretty much jerks with a goal?

I believe at the end that the female changeling basically told Odo that the Dominion War was just as much about taking down the Federation as it was trying to get him to join his people. A little glurgey but still good.

The thing that annoyed me most was that she then agreed to stand trial and then Odo went back to the Link. They should have at least had the female changeling killed or trying to escape. Odo going back to his people is perfectly in line with his character though.

[FONT=Verdana]I loved it!
My fav moment was when Sisko punched Q, and Q says “Picard never hit me!” and Sisko goes “I’m not Picard” And hurrah for that!!

Me, I love DS9. Used to stay up to watch it every week, which should give you some idea of my age…

Anyway, despite my love, I have a friend that calls herself a Trekkie. She believes that Voyager was a better show that DS9. I call blasphemy!

Do not like it.

"There’s a terrorist on the station. We MUST find him. He could either be in the bar or in the lobby. "

“He was in the lobby!”

“Great! But, now there is a conspiracy.”

“It could either be in the bar or the lobby…”
