And if so, what kind of vacuum do you have? I am in the market for a new NON-BAGLESS vacuum. I have a wonderful Kenmore upright but it’s too damn big. My small Eureka bagless can suck me.
So what do you use? And why? Would you get it again? Does it handle fur?
Honestly, I’ve been through zillions of vaccuum cleaners (well, OK, more like five or six), and none hold a candle to my Dyson.
Ever vaccuum I’d owned up till now crapped out within a couple of years. I’m tough on vaccuums, considering that between my giant headful of curly hair and two eternally shedding cats we create some mondo-sized dust bunnies… but it just felt like such unecessary waste of money, not to mention the guilt of throwing out such a big thing in the trash.
After a year, the Dyson is still running strong and showing no signs of crapping out on me.
That said, I’m pretty sure that all the models currently on the market are bagless. Any reason for the requirement that it be non-bagless?
“NON-BAGLESS”
So you want one with disposable, paper bags… right?
Yes, ChiefScott, I prefer the vacuums with the paper bags. All the fur and dust and stuff stays contained in the bags very nicely. I cannot tell you how nasty I find it to empty that darn cannister. With three cats, I have to pull out the gunk from the filters with my fingers, which ends up getting all that dust and stuff scattered around again. That sort of defeats the whole vacuuming process.
The only thing I don’t like about my Kenmore upright is the size. I really need something with a smaller footprint. It’s not broken, it hasn’t worn out in almost six years–it’s a great vacuum. But it belongs in a much bigger house with more than two closets.
I live in a small duplex (750 sq ft), have two cats, and use an Electrolux Oxygen Ultra that I bought factory refurbished from the CPO Electrolux website. I love it. I’ve had it over three years now. It fits easily in the back of my coat closet. I find canister vacuums to be better than uprights, myself.
I like to be able to vacuum up occasional small amounts of cat food, cat litter, and even, once in awhile, an ossified chunk of cat poo. That’s just the reality of life when you have a cat. With my old bagless vacuum, the vacuum immediately began to smell like hot cat food/litter/poo. But my Electrolux handles it, no problem, no smell. It also has a HEPA filter on it so it’s not kicking out a lot of dust.
I think it cost me $350 refurbished.
I live in a small duplex, does that count? I have a bagless (I know you want non-bagless but you did ask) Dirt Devil upright. it has different settings from high pile to bare floor, and the brush attachment handles the cat hair on the couches fairly well. I’d buy it again, it was fairly inexpensive and has served me well for several years.
I have a Eureka “The Boss” Smartvac upright. It’s powerful, and the quietest full-sized vac I’ve ever had. My wife got it, but I think it was pretty cheap - less that $200. Highly recommended.

ETA - it’s not small. Sorta standard-sized upright vac.
I have a bagged Dirt Devil upright with on board attachments. I don’t even know if this model is available anymore (it’s about six years old), but I think I gave around $130 for it then.
It handles hair from visiting dogs and I have used it to vacuum my truck’s interior (dark cloth seats) after traveling with (white or tan) dogs. It does ok.
The one that I would highly reccomend is an older model Kirby. It was the bomb when I had two cats, two dogs, an old man and two kids to clean up after. I’d have to say that it really sucked.
