I’m very scent-conscious, and I got to wondering what kind of products other people use to make their homes smell good. I wasn’t very pleased with anything I tried until I bought a tealight oil diffuser very similar to this one. And I love it! It makes my room smell *really *good. Since my roommate is a smoker, I need to actively improve the smell of my bedroom to prevent the air from becoming tobacconated.
I use the diffuser with apple-cinnamon essential oil ($2 for a 2-week’s supply), and apple-flavored tealights ($5 or less for a big bag), and the diffuser itself was only $3 at Meijer. I’ve tried a variety of air freshener sprays and a reed diffuser before, but none of those products has really gone the distance to making my room smell good all the time. Not to mention, for so cheaply!
Incoming poll. It’s multiple-choice! I tried to think of as many options as I could; however, being mortal and flawed, I’m sure I missed something.
I burn a lot of incense, because I think nag champa is the best smell in the world and it reminds me of home. My mother always burned it when I was a child, and it’s the scent I have associated with childhood.
I hate hate hate scents. I fear my house may smell faintly of cats, although I can’t smell it myself, but I definitely don’t want it to smell like cats and pine trees. Sometimes it smells like stew or baked goods, though, but that’s because I like to cook.
Right now we have a cinnamon broom in the hallway that is making the house smell awesome. I was just looking at them online and evidently they ward off bad spirits, but I just use it to ward off the spirit of last night’s chili. $3.99 at Publix!
I try to bake some kind of yeast-risen bread every weekend. That makes the house smell good for a day of two.
Also, we open windows when the weather permits. Since spring and fall last approximately three days here, there aren’t many opportunities.
I used to burn scented candles, but now I’m married to a man who hates them and all other artificial scented things. So the house smells how it smells, which I guess is a mixture of our laundry detergent and what we had for dinner last night.
I use so many different things depending on the room! Basement is carpet fresh, scented candles (either lit or on a warmer). Kitchen is cleaning products or scented candles (lit or warmer), my office is a reed diffuser but as that is frequently diffuse, I also use a scented oil burner. Sprays in the bathroom, but sometimes candles. candles in the bedroom, which also has a weak reed diffuser.
I use it all - I’ve got 3 dogs and a husband who smokes. Anything that will make my house not stink has been purchased and used.
Edit: I do have 2 hoyas, and when they bloom, the fragrance is wonderful!
Mostly I think “no smell” is best, so as much of the year as possible in Michigan I keep windows open. I would prefer “no smell” year 'round, but I share a small house with three dogs plus the occasional foster dog so there is that.
In winter - sometimes scented candles, sometimes incense. Also in winter I tend to cook/use the crock pot more, so there’s that nice cooking smell.
I also adore the smell of Murphy’s oil soap and I use it on my floors.
I use all kinds of different things, depending on what I want the house to smell like, what I have on hand, and what kind of mood I’m in.
When I can afford it though, my house smells like China Rain. I can’t remember the name of the store where I get it, or I’d post a link. (It’s earthly spirits or some such. A real hippie paradise.)
I open the windows, whenever I can (temps permitting). And, ironically, I live in New Jersey! There are roses and wisteria on my block, and it can smell *lovely *around here.
I am very sensitive to bad smells, so I use quite a few methods.
First, I keep my house very clean. I open windows whenever possible. And there is almost always a lit candle or four going.
My two cats cause the worst problem for me. I clean the litter box daily, use litter with crystals and sprinkle some arm and hammer deodorizer in it too. But I can still smell it more often than I like. I wish I could train them to use the toilet.
