I think I own a domain in one of the more unusual top-domains; namely .HM which belongs to “Herb & McDonald Islands”.
Why ever? Well, I wanted to register <mylastname>.com / .net / .org but all of them were busy, so I searched the net for the most unsual and unused domains I could find, and stumbled on .HM which, at the time of registration, cost only $19 per year. Now It’s at $35 - but still that’s an OK deal I think.
I have squiglitos.com (“the world’s first virtual snack food!”–an art joke among friends) and sunspace.org (my main site, which started out about solar-powered houses–hence my SDMB name). I also had a couple of others for a while but let them lapse.
Bought my site about four years ago as a way to publish my book reviews and other writings. It’s gone through several changes over the years as well as a few additions. There are a couple Lileks-like pieces in the essays section, and for awhile, I was keeping a daily journal. Now, there’s a skeleton of a blog and some old material, but I’ve been working on a redesign to freshen everything up.
I had a .com domain I got free through a promotion several years ago. I never did anything with it, but was eventually contacted by a filmmaker who had a fledgling company by the same name and he wanted to buy it. So, since I never used it and was a poor grad student at the time, I sold it to him for $300. Not bad on an initial $0.00 investment.
