I own a Weatherby Mark V .270. I don’t keep it at my place, since I don’t have any place to really put it (I don’t even have a bedroom closet.) Plus I live with an eight year-old (roommate’s son,) so there’s that issue as well. I certainly don’t have the money or space to get a gun safe/cabinet (plus that seems overkill for just one gun,) and while I could just get a trigger lock, I still wouldn’t like the idea of him finding it at all, so it’s kept at my parents’ in my dad’s gun safe.
It used to belong to my uncle…when he passed away, his arsenal was divided up to the family. I’ve taken it hunting a few times, but haven’t actually ever shot it (I don’t have good luck, all I ever see are does (which you can’t shoot during rifle season here,) or bucks that are too far away/blocked by trees).
At the very least I should take it to a range to sight in the scope that’s on it on the off chance I go hunting and there’s a deer I could shoot…
The Weatherby .270 is the reason I started handloading. And yeah, you need to sight it in but luckily the factory 130 grain spire points are relatively cheap and fine for deer.
I have a handgun at home, one for work, and am planning the purchase of at least one more in the near future for my everyday firearm needs. I also plan to buy a pump-action shotgun (Remington 800), because nothing says "get the f*ck out of my house like a pump action.
I’m a rural Midwesterner, so I grew up with fire arms. The present inventory is:
A .22 cal. Semi-auto pistol (great for potting coon and possums on the back porch and dispatching critters in live traps)
A S&W .38 Special that was my father’s
A .45 1911A1 Colt Army just for nostalgia (it’s the weapon I carried for five years on active duty – thank goodness I never had to use it)
A Remington 1100 semi-auto 12 gauge for pheasant and duck and deer (this is a no rifle state -wish I had a Browning )
A Remington single shot .22 cal. Rifle (my first gun at age eight)
An imitation Browning .22 cal. Semi-auto (good squirrel gun)
A JC Higgins .410 single shot (kept in the barn for stray tom cats)
Another .410 of debatable manufacture with a broken trigger (it was my wife‘s grandfather‘s barn gun).
A real Colt .36 cal. Cap and ball five shooter
A real Smith .52 cal. Cap and ball carbine
A reproduction 1861 Springfield .58 cal. rifled musket
A reproduction .58 cal Remington Zouave rifled musket.
A reproduction .44 cal Colt New Model Army cap and ball pistol
I don’t expect Armageddon. I’m just a rural Midwesterner. The problem is that my daughters and sons-in-law seem to have no interest in any of them. I suppose they will sell at the estate auction.
Three handguns (.25, .38, and .45), three rifles (7.62x39, 7.62x54R, and .223). The next intended additions to the collection are a Remington 870 12-gauge and a lever-action Winchester.
And a Glock 22.
And another AR-15. Or two. Or three. Or four. Those scratch two hobby itches: I get to BUILD something and then go shoot it!
Bohica .50 BMG single shot rifle.
The first time I fired it my hand went to my nose “Am I bleeding?”
It is like getting punched in the face.
Sounds like fun, right?
While blowin’ up shit with a gun is definately fun (and even better when drinking beers), I have 3 girls, one of whom is autistic. I don’t care how biometrically “safe” a gun safe is, the only way I can guarantee no accidents is to not have a gun in my house. Frankly, I’m not in the least worried about some perp coming into my house. And, even if they do, I bring a knife to a gunfight at night on my own turf.
You may already be aware of this, but you don’t have to own a gun to go to a gun range. Many places (at least around here) have several different models for rent, for those that either don’t own their own or just want to try a particular model.
I don’t own any guns and probably never will. My dad taught me to shoot shot guns, and actually bought me a 12 gauge, which I never wanted, never touched when he wasn’t goading me to, never treated as something I owned, and happily regifted it to my younger brother on his 15th birthday.
The last thing someone like me needs is to become comfortable with something that can easily take someone’s life from a couple of yards away.
I have a TEC-9 and an MAK-90. Anyone want to trade a .45 for a TEC-9? It comes with 3 extra magazines, a barrel extension, a recoil compensator and hard & soft cases as well as ammo.
I’m not a particularly violent person. And am well trained in martial arts so, in most cases, sel defense isn’t an issue, but I like guns. There’s something about the simplistic mechanical action that I find beautiful. I don’t own any automatic weapons I have several shotguns old and new a veritable showroom’s worth of handguns and a couple of rifles one of which is a high precision rifle that I like shooting very much. I also have an arsenal of airsoft guns but I prefer my gas pistols to any of them even the sniper rifle I have. I support the NRA and I think owning and knowing how to properly operate a gun is part of what it means to be civically responsible. On the other hand someone who knows himself to be violent or irresponsible and so decides to not own a gun is also to be respected.
I have two .45 M1911’s i’ve been modifying myself for the past few years as I find time and gain more knowledge of tooling the weapon and I love them like they were my children (not really, I probably love them more than if they were children, children talk back guns are pretty muc the opposite.) however I hate my Glock21 (no particular reason it’s just the redheaded stepchild of my .45 pistols.) I will trade you for two chickens and a look at your wife’s ankle.
Good thing, considering how well armed some will be.
I think part of the drive and appeal for a lot of gun owners is an appreciation for the remarkable workmanship that goes into the manufacture of a nice piece. You hold a well made, tight tolerance, superbly crafted assemblage of forged steel and wood in your hands and it’s hard not to marvel at the thought and care that went into its construction.
Mika, if you’re ever in the coastal New Hampshire/Maine area (ogunquit, wells, kittery, York, Eliot, Portsmouth NH, Dover NH) I’d be pleased to take you to my local rod and gun club
You have an open invite to my R&G club
This offer is also good for any Dopers in the region as well
I own a .357 magnum Ruger single action revolver, a Remington 870 shotgun and a Ruger 30-06 bolt action hunting rifle. Why so many guns? We ride our horses into the Rockies and need protection against Grizzly bears and wolves (yes, really). My wife wants a snub nosed Ruger .357 double action revolver for Christmas.
