My mate would like some help.
He remembers an incident vividly, but not where it came from (likely to be a book - but could be film or TV).
Era: modern
Where: A border (perhaps US - Canada?)
Storyline: A couple of cars are crossing when one is blown up by an explosive device. One traveller appears to then throw up, but is in fact disposing of the remote control he used.
Sounds like Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil. You’ve pretty much described the famous five-minute (or whatever it is) tracking shot that opens the movie. Except is the Mexico border.
I don’t know if* Touch of Evil* qualifies as modern era (Depends on your definition I suppose. It was made in 1958.) And as noted, there is no second car.
The scene opens with the bomber setting a timer, and the woman in the car hears a ticking sound, so certainly no remote control was needed. Most of the tension in the scene derives from the fact that we know there is a bomb set to explode, and the car keeps getting delayed for one reason or another.
