Do you recognise this explosive plot?

My mate would like some help.
He remembers an incident vividly, but not where it came from (likely to be a book - but could be film or TV).

Era: modern
Where: A border (perhaps US - Canada?)
Storyline: A couple of cars are crossing when one is blown up by an explosive device. One traveller appears to then throw up, but is in fact disposing of the remote control he used.

Do you recognise this?

Thanks in anticipation!

Sounds like Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil. You’ve pretty much described the famous five-minute (or whatever it is) tracking shot that opens the movie. Except is the Mexico border.

Hereit is, minus the second car and the throwing up/remote control part.

Well that’s a speedy response and the border and car bomb are certainly in place.

I’ll aks my mate if the remote control and concealment thereof are definitely needed…

I don’t know if* Touch of Evil* qualifies as modern era (Depends on your definition I suppose. It was made in 1958.) And as noted, there is no second car.

The scene opens with the bomber setting a timer, and the woman in the car hears a ticking sound, so certainly no remote control was needed. Most of the tension in the scene derives from the fact that we know there is a bomb set to explode, and the car keeps getting delayed for one reason or another.

My mate is seriously impressed by your speed, but politely comments:

  • it’s definitely recent (say last decade)
  • there’s a remote control (which the villain conceals by pretending to throw up)
  • there’s at least one more car (which the villain is travelling in)

He still can’t place if it’s a book, film or TV - the descriptions are vivid in his mind, so he’s leaning towards a book…

One bump then - come on Dopers!
