Do you regularly have change for $20 bill?

I usually get my cash $500 at a time (in $20s) to minimize the number of times I have to go to an ATM. I usually break one if I can to have some small change. But while I often have a $10 and a $5 along with a bunch of $20s in my wallet, more often than not I don’t have enough smaller bills and coins on me to total $20.

Is cash the thing of choice in Panama?

It’s because we’re apparently going to be stuck with singles, pennies, and nickels seemingly forever that I rarely use cash at all anymore, and therefore almost never have change for a twenty. As a result of my infrequent cash purchases I have a slowly growing pile of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Note I said “slowly”, so it’s not like it’ll amount to anything significant in the foreseeable future. The only way for me to get full value out of all that loose coin is to remember to bring some along when I expect to make a cash purchase. But, see my first point about how rarely I use cash in the first place.

So they just keep sitting there…

I usually do, mostly because I often go to garage sales, so 20s get used/broken before I spend smaller bills just in case I need a small combination to barter at a sale sometime in the near future. It can be embarrassing, even though possible, to argue down from five to three dollars for an item and then have to get change for a twenty. It’s more likely for me to have ten ones, six fives, and four tens, than to have four twenties. I am also of an age that I still feel awkward using a credit/debit card for small purchases.

$200-300 for me and the same reason. Who enjoys a trip to the ATM?

My poker games are some of the reasons I carry cash. They’re also one of the reasons I may have an odd selection of dollars in my pocket after cashing out.

I use cash for most transactions under $20 and virtually all under $10.

I almost always have change for a $20, as well as a $100.

I don’t normally have any cash at all.

Nope. I never have cash unless it’s summer festival and concert season. Thankfully, my bank refunds ATM fees so I find it easier to use cash if I just want to buy a beer or some food from a street vendor.

Come to think of it, the last time I needed change for a $20 was at work when that was all I had and I needed to get the bus home. Of course, since I work in a store, that wasn’t even a thought as to how to change it.

I’ll draw a lot of cash before poker because we always have a cash game following a tournament. I rarely have anything in my pocket after cashing out, though.

I like having a bunch of small bills, I like accumulating them especially to have for travel. When I get too many I put some in the tote bag that I always put on top of my rolling laptop bag, so I always have some at hand when I need them.

I like to start the week with around $30 cash, so it depends if you ask me on Monday or Friday.

I’m with the majority. I’ll pull $100 from the ATM and break 20s as needed spending the smaller bills until I have to break another 20. When I get down to 40 I top off with another 100.

In my wallet it depends when I last hit the ATM and where I went afterwards. I’ll break 20’s to not spend ones and fives. Those get stuffed into my pockets until the end of the day. Then they go into the wallet where I’ll start spending them instead of breaking the last 20. At work, my toolbox contains about $30 in smaller bills and dollar coins for the “hey let’s order in tonight” surprises. This is where alot of the aforementioned smaller bills end up.

Thought of this thread this a.m. I play 9 holes of golf most Sundays. We have a standard $5 bet. I looked in my wallet before the round and had a lone single, plus 2 quarters I was going to use as ball markers. To paraphrase Lee Trevino, “Needing to make a putt to win a major isn’t pressure. Pressure is playing a guy named Vito for $20, with only $10 in your wallet!”

Then I thought of this again after the round, when we were settling up. Most people win/lose a couple of bucks, so singles are useful. One guy tossed in a $20 to cover his $5. :smack:

The Chase ATM where I generally go lets me choose fives. And that’s good for me because the vending machines at work won’t accept anything larger than a fiver.

So, yeah, I can usually break a twenty for someone.

ETA: Last month, when Kayla went to NYC for spring break, I had to remind her to take along SOME folding money for tips at the airport.

Since I retired, I almost never carry cash. Maybe a handful of change is all I’ve had in my wallet for months now. Everything’s either debit card or credit card.

Oh, and giving someone two tens to someone looking for change for a twenty? Other people will more likely have change for a ten than the whole twenty. At least, I thought that was the point.
