For me, it all depends on where I am. If I’m at home I sleep with the door open so that my spoiled rotten cats can come and go. I only ever close the door if I’m trying to sleep and they’re being loud and obnoxious.
On the other hand, if I’m at my mom’s or brother’s, I sleep with the door closed. This is partly for privacy, but also deep conditioning. Growing up, we always slept with our bedroom doors closed. No particular reason for it, it’s just the way we did it.
I know that my mom sleeps with her door mostly closed so that her spoiled rotten cat can come and go.
The door has to be closed, otherwise the lights from the other rooms keep me awake. The closet doors - all of them, not just the one in my room- have to be closed too before I go to bed, but that’s just because I’m neurotic.
Canadian. Door always closed, in order to keep out the dog. He’s a Husky and when he was a pup he burrowed into the bed, cause that’s what they do. So, closed.
Like many other posters have said, I leave the door open a crack for the sake of the brat cats. However, when my mom gets up in the morning, she usually closes my door so that the breakfast noises don’t wake me up. Why, yes, I am rather spoiled.
As long as I can remember, I’ve slept with my bedroom door closed. The only exception is when I’ve lived alone (without roommates).
3 reasons - 1) I’m a FREAK about privacy, (2) I need it as dark as possible before I can fall asleep, (3) I need it as quiet as possible to be able to stay asleep (I’m a very light, fussy sleeper).
Born & Bred Canadian. Most people I know sleep with their doors open though.
I live in Minnesota, which pretty much qualifies me as Canadian, I think. Our philosphy is simple. If you want to wake up 16 times a night with a cat sniffing your face to see if you’re awake, leave the door open. If you want the cats out, shut the door. So mostly that means open on the weekends, closed during the week.
I always slept with it closed when I was home… upstairs, it was the only way to have quiet/darkness/privacy. No - that’s not true. I had the door open when I was little. I’m not sure when that stopped.
When I moved to the basement, I slept with the door closed… climate control, and keeping the big gaping darkenss out. ;^)
My apartment by myself, I had the door open. I remember being surprised, one day, when it blew shut… I’d completely forgotten it existed at all, really.
Now I’ve got a studio apartment, and lack a bedroom, much less a door. :^)
I usually leave it open so the cat can come and go. He prefers to stomp on my bladder in the morning. Sometimes if he’s being a real pain I’ll toss him out and close the door, but not very often. If I happen to have overnight company then I close the door.
One house we lived in when I was a kid lacked a door for my (and my sister’s) bedroom. The other house had a door which was usually closed when my parents were screaming at each other. Didn’t help much really.
American here, living with my boyfriend, dog and two cats.
Door open, has been since I was an infant. Only closed it when I was having ‘me’ time as a teenager or to keep the noise down when I was up and my parents were asleep. Also, when I had two male roommates.
Now, we only close the door when we have guests (or one of us is up and the other is trying to sleep), though our latch doesn’t work, so it’s open by the time we get up anyway.
We don’t close the bathroom door unless we’re planning to be stinky, or again, have guests. Our bathroom door doesn’t face the bedroom at all, if it did, we’d close the door.
I sleep with the door open. Always. Unless there happens to be someone sharing my bed (I vaguely remember those times) and I happen to have a house/apartmentmate, in which case I close it out of respect for everybody involved.
