…would you want to sleep on the “open” ended side or would you want to sleep on the side against the wall?
I’m claustrophobic so I’d want to sleep on the open side. The possibility of being crowded against the wall would make me hyperventilate.
Open side, for the same reason I always get aisle seats on the plane: I hate feeling trapped. I wouldn’t call it claustrophobia, but I need to know there’s an easy way to get out. And I hate having to crawl over or disturb people if I need the bathroom.
I don’t mind the wall side, but I find I’m in the minority on that, so that’s the side I generally take. If I had a bed mate who also didn’t mind, I’d probably base it on which of us gets up more or earlier, to minimize crawling over people.
I love the wall side. I feel very safe and cozy and he’s always had to get up before me anyway.
Right now we have a big queen size bed in the middle of the room and I am still toward the “wall side” even though it’s a couple of feet away. He gets the “door” side.
I had this situation with a previous girlfriend. When I slept at her apartment, the left side of the bed was open. I wanted to sleep on that side so that the woman would be to the right of the man, as God intended, and also so I could “leap out of bed and protect her” if I had to. She wanted the open side so she could leap out of bed and protect me.
When my wife and I first got together, I want to say that I was on the open side and then we switched so I was on the wall side because of the baby. I definitely remember being on the wall side when we were in our crappy little ghetto apartment (and I did try to leap out of bed once, naked, to protect her from the wind rattling some paper). Since then, our bed as been in the open so the situation doesn’t apply to us.
I want the wall side so the boogeyman gets her first.
I picked either, but in the past when I’ve had to make the decision I’ve always voluntarily picked the wall because I don’t care so much and I knew whoever I might be sharing with had much more definite opinions about where they needed to be.
And this is generally the reason my companions feel the need to be on the outside. Apparently, I have a type.
I don’t really care, but for practical reasons, specifically my GF generally goes to bed much earlier than I do, it would be most prudent to have the “open” side.
My bed is against a wall and on the occasion that I have a sleepover, I prefer to sleep next to the wall. I think it’s because when I am alone, there’s nothing between me and the wall so when I have a bunkmate, I don’t want him to be between me and the wall either.
I always sleep on the left side of the bed (as viewed when you’re standing at the foot) so I’d stick with that, wall or no wall. Would weird me out to be on the wrong side of my partner!
I’m happy to give her first choice, but I want the open side. Less likely to bang on the wall in the night, and I often hang off the bed a bit (even sleeping on a king, no idea why).
I said wall because my wife goes to the bathroom or to check on the kid more often than I do. So it minimizes climbovers. I also seem to be able to get over the footboard, while she can’t.
I always sleep squished up against the wall, even in a single.
Possibly this is due to having a bunk bed as a kid, and being terrified of falling out, or maybe I just really like walls? I dunno.
I sleep with my husband in a twin (or a single, whatever you want to call it) that rests on a box spring that rests on the floor.
I pick the side with the wall because although he is thinner, he doesn’t actually know how to be “small” like I do. Whenever we tried to switch places he’d practically push me out of bed. I’m the one who gets up first in the morning though, so every day consists of stepping over him to get out of bed.
I have fallen out of the top of a very big bunk bed before (and a regular bed on a frame too), but I learned from that experience
I voted that I prefer the wall side but now I think I was wrong, because I like to hang one foot off the bed and then I couldn’t do that. I just didn’t think of it because my bed isn’t against the wall.
I have to have the open side so that I can reach A) my glasses on the night stand and B) the clock/radio.
My husband and I always have the same sides of the bed, so I’d sleep on my side, regardless of whether it was against the wall or not. When we lived on our first boat, my side happened to be the open side. It also happened to be the side under a leak in the deck, but that’s another story…
Anyway I couldn’t vote because none of the options applied to me.
Open side: in addition, I nearly always have to sleep closer to the window or door, whatever leads to the outside.
I find a kind of physical comfort in having a wall to touch.
However, I also need to get up at night to pee. Rather a lot. So the wall side would be rude to my partner. I guess I could just slide down to the foot of the bed…
