I slept on the outside, and I sleep on the side closer to the door.
mrAru has spent so much time sleeping in a rack on a sub he seems to prefer small enclosed spaces and prefers being by the wall. While I also like little nooks, I prefer to sleep on the side where the door is, or the outside as appropriate.
Exactly – it’s not about open or wall, it’s about the nightstand, and being able to reach my glasses/drink/tissues/clock/book/pen and paper/lip balm/medications/etc., etc., etc. There’s a reason why almost every time I reach for something on the nightstand, I knock something else onto the floor.
I voted that it doesn’t apply, but that I’d pick open–but actually, it did apply not too long ago and I did wind up on the open side. I’m not sure that either of us gave much thought to it; I think it’s just that it normally worked out that she got into bed first and that I, typically, got up to shower first. At the moment, were someone to suddenly decide to take up sleeping in my bed, it wouldn’t apply, as the bed’s “free-standing,” so to speak. (When I’m sleeping alone, I tend towards the middle of the bed, regardless of where it’s situated. My cat tends of late towards the upper left hand corner, though sometimes she’ll get into a mood where she needs to be on whichever side I’m facing–so when I flip over, a few minutes later there will be the ‘dainty’ step of kitty feet trodding over my pillow and head so that she can switch sides.)
Assuming that I would be getting up more often in the night, I would opt for the open side, for both our sakes. Also, my partner is quite a bit smaller than me, so he could probably crawl over me without waking me up.
Roddy
My wife strongly prefers the wall or away-from-door side. I have a slightly less strong preference for open side – a preference that has increased as I age and need to get up more often. We’re compatible.
:foreveralone:
I’m an insomniac, plus when I do sleep I can only sleep in certain positions, due to injuries.
So, even when I’m sleeping with someone, I just hold her until she goes to sleep, then get up and go sleep elsewhere.
Makes 'em mad, no matter how you try to explain it.
I usually get up once in the night to go to the washroom, so I like the open side to prevent the necessary crawling over my partner or to the end of the bed.
This was the case with Mr. Legend and me when we had a small bedroom. I went to bed last and got up first, and I was also more likely to be up in the middle of the night. And back then, Mr. Legend was more limber than I was, especially during the pregnancy days.
Once we moved to a house with a decent-sized master bedroom, we put the bed in the middle of the wall and gloried in the ability to both have the open side. And even later, once we both developed insomnia, we just went ahead and started sleeping in separate rooms so that if and when someone actually can asleep, there isn’t anyone around to wake them up.
It’s not my current situation any more, but I would be on the open side. I liked being able to get up without climbing over someone half my size, and she liked having someone between the door and her, or something.
Perhaps you should have asked for genders in the poll.
