Do you smoke your E-cig at work? (Or indoors)

I’ve decided to jump on the E-cig bandwagon. (I went with Blu Cigs BTW).

It seems ridiculous that I should have to go outside to smoke this thing. I’m wondering what peoples experiences are regarding this issue. I can’t remember where but I vaguely recall people getting rather pissy about other people smoking these things indoors.

Thoughts?

I smoke it indoors at home. I’ve never tried it in a no smoking area; I’d probably lose the argument that “it isn’t tobacco” and it’s not worth the hassle.

Inside at home with regularity. In a car with non-smokers, that always gets 'em.

But I can’t seem to pull the trigger at work unless I have the office to myself. I just don’t want to have to explain myself.

I’ve been wondering about this too.

Here in NYC, I’ve never seen anyone smoking an e-cig anywhere. Why don’t people puff on these things on the subway or in a restaurant or a movie theater?

I’d have bouncers and outraged patrons beating me with bar stools.

Someone posted on the 'Dope that s/he only smoked one with a blue LED in bars lest people felt they could light up real ones.

Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t openly “pretend smoke” in a professional office any more than I’d drink regular Coca Cola out of a highball glass. Professionalism includes avoiding the appearance of impropriety. But use your best judgment. A large company is different than a small more family-oriented business. In the latter case, and I was surrounded by friends who supported my quest to stop smoking, I might ask them if they’d mind me taking a few puffs off the fake cigarette while sitting at my desk. It also makes a difference if you’re in cubicle-land vs. a secluded office.

You also have to think about the other people who might be kicking the habit. Watching you go through the motions might increase their urge to smoke.

I puff freely at home and at friends places but don’t care for the glaring finger-pointing attention and the required explanations when out and about. I might take a stealth hit once in a while, but generally head for a bit of a private place or go outside with the smokers.

My devices do not resemble cigarettes at all.

I don’t at work because we have a policy that specifically prohibits e-cigs. I don’t really know why, but they do.

Otherwise I pretty much use mine anywhere, even in other people’s homes (without asking first, I’m such a jerk that way). I’ll get asked now and again and I explain what it is and I haven’t had a problem.

My device looks nothing like a cig either. The thing is huge by comparison, about the size of a sonic care toothbrush, with a shiny chrome finish.

I find that when I just start using it, many don’t notice. I’ve decided in my mind that the first thing anyone notices with smoking is the odor. Someone smells smoke and they start looking for the offender. Those who see the smoke get confused because they don’t smell anything and at least a percentage figure that I can’t smell it, doesn’t bother me any, so I don’t care.

I work for a very large company (it’s cubicle-land). We don’t have a policy against them, but I have a suspicion it would be frowned upon. And I really don’t wanna be hassled. Most of the time, I take it outside and get some fresh air. On really cold days, though, I just take it into a bathroom stall. It doesn’t have a smell, so it works out fine. And as long as I exhale hard and down, the plume dissipates quickly enough to not be detected. I do occasionally suck on it at my desk when I’m stressed out. Only after the coworker behind me goes home, though. And I hold it in long enough so practically no visible vapor comes out of my mouth.

Anyway. I’ve been out to restaurants with my mom and she openly puffs on the thing pretty much anywhere. She enjoys the negative attention and inevitable arguments, whereas I would find it mortifying. Different strokes.
