Do You Support Cell Phone Use In Flying Aircraft??

We’d need a segregated no-cellular-phone zone, especially around emergency exit rows.

Heck, they’ve been talking about taking seats out of planes - fine. Let them yap on their phones standing up in a soundly walled offish area. I’ll give them a discount to allow me to sit in peace.

I also say no. To me it’s a space issue. Because we are all packed in so tightly, the rules of personal space change a bit. As an example, whenever I’m sitting next to someone who is reading anything, I just can’t help but look and read along
…I…just…can’t…help…it. It’s only 12 inches away from me…it steals/occupies my attention.

Now, I’m not saying we should ban reading on airplanes. I’m just using it to illustrate an unconscious behavior. When we are in that type of packed-in environment those around us become part of our personal space. Extrapolating this dynamic to someone using a cell phone right next to me and I would have the same problem…their conversation would steal/occupy my attention in an uncomfortable way. I would be unable to avoid focusing my attention on their conversation. This is nearly the same when they are talking to their seatmates, but there you are at least able to hear the other side of the conversation. With the cell phone you are occupied filling in the other side from your imagination. It can’t be helped! Because it is so close you get…involved.

Yes yes, I know, it’s my problem, not theirs. But I think that this is the source of the discomfort with allowing cell phone use in flight.

Yes, but only with this proviso. All people planning to use a cellphone in flight must identify themselves beforehand, and the airline puts a screaming kid in the seat next to them.

Otherwise, no way. You can more or less prevent the person next to you from talking to you, but you can’t prevent the person next to you talking into his phone.
