So Ryanair is becoming the first European airline to introduce in-flight mobile-phone access, with a target date of “mid-2007.” Bastards. Planes are one of the few places it’s possible to get away from the damn things. I absolutely dread the day that mobile-phone use becomes possible on the Underground.
Hoo-ray. :dubious:
Now the Terrorists can use cell phones to detonate their Infernal Devices in mid-Atlantic.
Doesn’t anybody think anymore?
I see the idea become doomed by safety concerns. Not about terrorists, but about repeated incidents of uncontained air rage.
They can use them now, just not mid-ocean.
I suggest that people traveling together should be seated in different parts of the plane, so that their conversations not bother ColonelDax.
Seriously, man. Just put your earphones on and watch the damn movie.
Whereas today, obviously, any self-discerning terrorist would go “Oh noes, I can’t take my cell phone out to detonate the plane, because cell phone use is NOT ALLOWED!”
Not that I condone this new practice, I’m quite happy there’s one place I don’t have to hear the stupid Frog ringtone, the “Mountain King” or one of the variations of DADADAAADADADADAAA (T-mobile in case you don’t spead DADADAAA).
Would that I could, but this is Ryanair - all 737s and short hops, no movies. Which means, sadly, no place to hide from the eventual prospect of being subjected to “… and don’t forget to pick up some milk” at 25,000 feet.
JRDelirious, let’s hope so.
No, YOU shut up and watch Weekend at Bernie’s II: Electric Bougaloo!

See, I just don’t hear other peoples’ cellphone convesations any more. It’s just minor background noise - just normal urban hum. Do you hear all the cars that pass by your apartment? What about birdcall when you’re out in nature? Just stop what you’re doing and listen; I’d bet there are hundreds of sounds you’re simply zoning out. Why should people talking be any different?
I have to disagree here. For some reason, many people speak into their cell phones **MUCH MUCH LOUDER ** than they would speak to a live human sitting next to them. In an enclosed space where you can’t get away from said person, it would be so annoying as to be homicide-inducing.
Seriously. I can just picture myself next to some stock trader or lawyer on a three hour flight, with the seatbelt sign on, having to try to ignore his overloud pronouncements and inane babble.
Really? In my experience, most people just use their normal speaking voice. I know I do.
Take notes, visibly. When he asks you what you are doing with his company-confidential information, say, “I though it was public. You did speak it in a confined environment where others have no choice but to hear…”
No kidding. About minute 3 I would take away his cell phone and jam it up his ass. People have no idea how loud they are on a cell, or how irritating it is to everybody around them. They blissfully chatter on, insulated by the knowledge that their conversation is more important than anything else on the planet. This is a stupid idea, and I hope violence insues quickly. That way they’ll stop, and we can have some relative peace in the air.
Most do, when they are in a quiet environment. Planes, even when they are “quiet,” aren’t quiet. The engine and wind sounds make a lot of background noise. It strikes me as an environment where the cell phone talker might have to cover his or her other ear, which is always a dead giveaway that they’re going to be talking LOUD.
Exactly. For some reason people tend to forget about noise-suppression circuitry in microphones, or that maybe the person at the other end of the call IS in a quiet environment and can hear them just fine.
Besides, there’s the principle of the thing. Who the hell has to be in a conversation every second of their waking existence at every point on the globe?
I’m telling you, it’s gonna be ugly…
In my experience, it’s not quite as bad as this, but only just.
They need to have separate mobile phone and non-mobile phone sections. The mobile phone users obviously should ride outside, on the wings.
I’d disagree. In my experience nearly everyone using a mobile phone speaks more loudly than normal.
There’s perfect reception in all of the subway in Stockholm. You bet the operators wanted to make money from bored commuters.
I just hope Ryanair has surgeons standing by when the plane lands, to remove a number of phones where they will have been shoved by enraged passengers during flight.
Ryanair is a low fares airline.
They’ll give you a laxative.
