Most people think emos are depressed do you think they are why or why not?
“Depressed” means actual lethargy - sometimes described as, “Very hard to even get up to make a cup of coffee”. I wouldn’t think so. A lot of emos have plenty of energy but are miserable and unhappy, which isn’t the same as depression.
I never got depressed as the general vibe. Overly emotional maybe. Liking black in clothing might make the depressed connection?
Alt life-style, especially in the 80s when they got started.
There was a fair number of Emos in the gaming community in the 80s and 90s at least. More outsiders.
yes, people usually generalize it as depressed when they see the black clothing, I also don’t get why people bark at us ;-;
Emo seems to be people who embrace misery. That is not the same as depressed. Emo people certainly seem to be out and about and doing life things. They just gripe about it a lot. My admittedly anecdotal experience with emo people is it is a phase and they usually grow out of it. At the end of the day it is a tiring way to live.
I have been mistaken for goth or emo quite a bit. I have dark hair, pale skin and wear a lot of black clothing-sometimes with bat themed jewelry, and am generally sad. I am NOT goth or emo! I was reading Poe and doing all this before it was cool! Now, get off my lawn!
for me its a self expressing style, because of it being a sub-culture, its usually music that makes up the sub-culture.
I wouldnt say its cool, u get bullied for it
Artistic types seem to be more keen on that. It may inform their art.
Still, it usually does not last. Just a natural progression of things is all.
How many emo 50 year olds do you see?
I actually have seen a few lol, uhm but not many
I was also getting bullied before it was cool.
I think they come in all flavors. A lot of people who I know that are really into, say, emo music seem to be pretty well adjusted. And some are not. But they only really “dress emo” for shows. I guess it comes down to what do you mean by “emo”?
im just saying its not “Cool” in society.
I don’t know that you would generally run into them, but if you could find an 80s Emo band still performing, you would probably see some 50+ Emos.
I just checked, it looks like Jawbreaker is still performing, so good chance to find older Emos there. As I write, this part of the conversation is getting silly.
a genuine person who enjoys dressing emo no matter if they are alone or with people
As Velocity alludes to, actual depression is far more than sad. I’ve always found the emos to be more about how everything in life is ponderous.
I understand what you meant. I was being silly. I like being silly.
On a serious note-
It is cool IF you are with a group of emo people. This is undoubtedly part of the appeal of any subculture. In mainstream society, you do not fit in. In your particular subculture you are welcomed or even celebrated.
Doubtless there are some.
I’d think someone like Andy Warhol was an OG emo person and he lived to be 58 and was that way the whole time.
yeah he’s cool
Good thing there’s google as I had no idea what “emo” even is. Some offshoot of a “punk rocker”?
