I think he’s funny enough, though I only know him from Talking Dead. He surely works a lot. At the end of one of the TD shows he said his father had died that day!
Heh. Trying to recall his work I keep going “Well, that thing was pretty funny…no, wait, that was Mike Phirman. But that other thing - nope, Phirman too. But how about…dammit, Phirman!”
So all I’ve gotten out of this is that I’m a Mike Phirman fan and am blanking on Hardwick.
Big fan. I think overexposed is a pretty loaded phrase. If you enjoy someone, you won’t care if they are on a lot of things that you want to watch, right? You only consider it overexposed if you already don’t like them. I don’t watch a lot of the Talking X shows because I don’t watch the underlying shows either, but I like his standup, and @midnight is usually terrific. (When it’s bad, it’s because of a bad panel, imo.) He’s done good voice-over work, too.
I think he’s great on the nerdist podcast, but he comes across kinda douchey on @midnight. I’ve never seen talking dead.
Big fan. But I only watch him on Talking Dead, so he could be over-exposed and I wouldn’t know it. He does pander, but he gets self-deprecating digs in often enough that I can overlook it.
I don’t think that really follows. I’m a huge fan of the Pixies, but one of my Pandora radio stations plays something by either the Pixies, or their former lead singer, Frank Black, every third song. (I think it’s confused because Frank Black has released music as Frank Black, Frank Black and the Catholics, Black Francis, and, of course, The Pixies, and Pandora doesn’t realize these are all basically the same guy.) On the way to work this morning, it played four of his songs back-to-back. I really like Frank Black. I’m okay with not hearing any of his music for another year or so, right now.
Oh, good, I’m not the only one.
I don’t see him on TV, thankfully, but I used to really enjoy the Nerdist podcasts. I like him when he’s being silly and funny and loose, but don’t like him when he’s crude or has an agenda. Even though the podcasts have slowed down this year, I also have listened to fewer of them. I think his shtick is wearing thin on me.
I mostly hear him on the podcast. I haven’t heard much of his standup until his recent special. He’s a really good comic. Hosting and interviewing are a completely different skillsets. I think he does a good job with both. So good host, good interviewer and funny comic.
I like him. I like his work. I make cynical cracks in my head, because he’s kind of fawning in his podcast and never seems to be have any negative opinions. And I’m sure he is an upbeat guy who is generally positive. But I suspect his snarky @Midnight mode, where he gives himself permission to carp and mawk, is not exactly a put-on either. If he didn’t have that show, he’d need some other outlet for his more acerbic self, because his usual niche in entertainment is as an enthusiast.
The podcast is nice in that it’s a long conversation with somebody. It’s not an interview, so Hardwick also gives his own thoughts rather than merely prompting the guest. It’s bizarre to me in some ways because I’m learning that apparently comedians all know each other with connections that go way back. At one point it was mentioned that Pee Wee Herman had been in an improv group with Pat Morita. The world works a lot differently than I knew.
I marked “no, I don’t like him” even though I do like him. He seems nice, but I don’t find him funny.
He’s OK.
There’s a fine line between annoying and not annoying for your typical over-caffeinated, fast-talking, nerdy, hipster, and he does a very good job of staying on the non-annoying side (at least in Talking Dead). Coming from someone in my age demographic, that might be ether a good or bad thing.
I like him in his podcasts because he rarely tries to over-shine his guests, but I wished you had a “Not as funny as he thinks he is.” option, because he seems to crack himself up a lot more than I think is warranted.
Speaking of Talking Dead… I tried watching* After the Thrones* last night. What a snooze-fest! Give me Chris Hardwick over those drones any day!
Fair point, but there is a difference between voluntary exposure and involuntary, right? Pandora is sort of involuntary.
I’m not sure what you mean, or how it applies to the idea of getting burnt out on a particular performer. If I’m burnt out because I binged (voluntary) on nothing but Frank Black songs for two weeks, or I’m burnt out because my favorite coffee house has been playing (involuntary) nothing but Frank Black songs for two weeks, either way, I’m burnt out on an artist I normally enjoy.
Is he the one that plays Thor?
I’m holding out hope, since the new trailer is actually funny. But the trailer doesn’t even suggest the movie will live up to this poster.
Hardwick, not Hemsworth.
I’ve seen his standup a few times and find him hilarious. Having seen him in smaller venues as part of other shows its hit and miss as is @midnight.
