So The Walking Dead states that Daryl may or may not be gay. If he is, would this change your perception of the character? It WOULD explain the non-romances with Carol and Beth. But I think that he’s not. Just because the story’s out there, and the build-up would be too big and overshadowing. And, since they say there are plans to add a gay character, I can’t see them adding Daryl beiing gay on top of it.
I think it was pretty obvious Daryl and Carol bumped uglies, as for Beth she was 16 and they were constantly on the run, for god sakes she hadn’t even tasted booze before Daryl got her drunk.
Just cuz he ain’t a sleazebag doesn’t mean he is gay.
No, I don’t think so. I think the recent discussion about it has reduced the chances by a lot. Now, it will seem forced, while if they revealed it last year or the year before when the conversation was not happening, it would have felt more like a genuine choice of the writers.
It would just make him like a lot of gay people I’ve known in my life - his sex life is only a small part of who he is, and otherwise, he’s just like everybody else. Well, except for being a zombie-killing bad-ass, but in context, so is everyone else still alive at this point.
Broomstick, it matters to me not at all if he turns out to be gay. I have no problem with that. Mahaloth summed up my thoughts better than I could. I was just speculating based off of the article.
We’d all have to start thinking about what kind of sleazy guy could be turned on by a greasy, pie-eyed, lank-haired hillbilly who probably smells like one of the walkers. Instead of, you know, women 12-82. Yeesh.
If he was, Merle would have likely made his life a living hell, I don’t see the character of Merle being particularly accepting of a homosexual brother, and in the earlier episodes, Daryl seemed to look up to Merle…
I did a quick search to see how the comic book series handled the character and was surprised to see no mention of Daryl. I didn’t realize he was a made for TV character.
I agree if they make him gay now it would seem forced.
I’m only up through season two, but I would not be exactly pleased if Daryl “turned out” to be gay. (I doubt I would stop watching the show however.) And it’s not because I think Daryl’s actor is hot; Glenn is much more my type.
I just don’t like it when shows make sudden changes like this. It’d be a bit different if there were actual hints of it earlier, so I could look back and say “Oh! Okay. I see.” But seemingly out of nowhere?
As an example, I was not happy when Willow “became” gay (in the Buffy TV series) - though my lesbian friend was thrilled. Wouldn’t the more accurate term be bisexual, since Willow had a thing for both Oz and Xander well before she met Tara? Yet gay it is.
Same thing with Grey’s Anatomy. Callie had relationships with both George and Mark, yet she develops a relationship (and marries) a woman, and she’s now considered a lesbian, not bisexual.
Anyway, I think I’m straying from my point. I guess I don’t like it when shows shake up the character concepts too much.
I have absolutely no problems if the characters are gay/bi to start with. I couldn’t be an anime fan if that bugged me too much.
It’s not a sexuality issue. If they fundamentally change the way a character is portrayed it seems forced. Anytime they force a big change on a character it feels like a stunt. Stunts usually come from either desperation or lazy writing.
My daughter, a 13 year old girl who has a massive crush both on Norman Reedus and on the character he portrays, would want to punch the writer full hard in the taint if they went that direction. Me? I don’t really care. If I had to take a stand, I’d say I think he is the same as I believe Batman to be: asexual. Daryl, like Batsy, is too busy being awesome to think of sex at all.
If you watch the show carefully, its made pretty clear he’s a zombisexual. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. What a consenting man and a reanimated corpse get up to in the privacy of their own home is none of my or your business.
I wouldn’t care either way.
That said, if he was gay in the show, I think I’d prefer him to be with some dude who’s the polar opposite of him. So not like a rugged outdoor hunter, jack of all trades, type guy. Maybe him with some scientist type guy or a doctor or something.
Thinking about this more, I think it’s because those sorts of characters are already on the show (rugged outdoor types) and while there have been some doctors (the old guy, can’t remember his name) and scientists, they haven’t really interacted with Daryl, so at this point, we shouldn’t have any clues towards his sexuality. If that makes sense.
The writers of The Walking Dead do things because they think, “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if…”. That aside, were he gay, his hair wouldn’t be 10W40.
Texted my daughter about this at lunch. She indicates that Daryl/Carol is the only permissable pairing for DD. Any other pairing is wrong and whoever thought of it is a terrible person.
She and her fellow Daryl fangrrrls had a collective conniption a while back when a publicity photo showed Beth wearing Daryl’s distinctive knife. Even that was too close, for them, to shipping Daryl with someone other than Carol.
