Do Your Friends/Family Use Message Boards?

I certainly don’t suggest them to everyone, but anyone who comes over will hear me mention a message board, because my laptop is connected to my TV, and I usually have music on… But for those who are huge music (or movie) fans, I’ll occasionally scroll and talk about the topics, and tell them how cool it would be for them to include their knowledge, and learn, etc… “Yeah yeah” followed by no action. And the two I’ve mentioned this to don’t like anything else, don’t know anything else. Very unable to respond or explain why not, except once when my cousin mentioned how it was difficult to use his phone.

No, no one. Not family, not friends, that’s why I always talk about “my message board” when mentioning the SDMB, because “the straight dope” would be even more confusing to them. However, I have made two good and dear real life friends here who of course use the SDMB also (and certainly other message boards).

No. I do not know anyone besides you jokers who use a message board.

Unless you consider FB a messageboard, mostly no. I assume my kids are on various forums dedicated to their interests/careers, but I’m not aware of them. My wife has a dormant FB account back from when the high school required it, but according to her she hasn’t logged in for 7 years.

My wife is the only one aware of my participation here, as I occasionally discuss threads with her.

I have a few of friends who still use message boards - or A message board - but I met those friends ~on~ a message board. I met one of my dearest friends on a horse-oriented board over 25 years ago. She lived in Kansas and I lived in Pennsylvania at the time. We met in person after about 8 years or so, and now after many life changes for both of us we live in the same town. I just had dinner with her and her husband last night

Nope. Nobody I know uses messages boards. Some see them as outdated, others see them as some new fangled thing.

I don’t know anyone personally who uses them–not even popular ones like Reddit. They prefer social media instead (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat) or simply don’t like going online all that much.

This.

The only “won’t get you a funny look” boards I’m aware of are for niche interests; e.g., I belong to one for BMW 2-series owners (it still uses vBulletin…sometimes I go there just because I already know how to do stuff!).

My wife regularly checks the website Wenxuecity which has sections that kind of resemble a message board.

I do not know a single person in real life who uses a message board.

Occasionally I’ll be talking to someone and I’ll mention something I saw on a message board. The reaction is always utter indifference. I don’t get any funny looks, but nobody ever asks what message board I’m talking about, or what a message board is.

Do Your Friends/Family Use Message Boards?

Oh, god, I hope not! One of my biggest fears is that I’ll be in a discussion with a friend or coworker, and they’ll raise an eyebrow and say "That’s not what you posted yesterday, digs…"

I’ve mentioned to a friend or the wife, “I saw some interesting Star Wars news on that Café Society board” … but they’ve never asked how to get here.

Said wife sits next to me every night while I’m posting (and pretending to watch TV with her), but she’s too smart to give a crap about the drivel I’m reading.

My friends are artsy Instagrammers who probably think of Compuserve whenever I mention a message board…

Methinks to be the only member of my family/friends to use message boards.
