Talking SDMB Outside the Shop

How often do you talk about what you read or discuss on SDMB, in your personal conversations with your real-life associates?

I do, with very close people, maybe once a week. Very rarely, might discuss what I intend to post with someone, or ask an opinion to help formulate my own .

If a conversation comes up IRL that I’ve previously had on the Dope, I will reference stories or opinions that I’ve heard here.

That said, I don’t mention this place by name, nor do I mention the fact I’m referencing people oin a message board. If I reference someone on this board, I typically (for the ease of conversation) say something like: “A friend of mine…”

I realize that’s stretching the definition of “friend”, but there you have it.

My husband and son hear about SDMB comments, information and stories probably 2-3 times a month. I think they both believe I’m a lot more addicted to this place than I actually am

I’m like Grr! - I do reference “Something I read online…” or “I was participating in a discussion online…” but I don’t reference the group name. Sometimes I say it was a messageboard discussion but most people don’t even seem to know what a messageboard is.

I think I reference it quite a bit, to be honest. I work from home by myself so the SDMB is my de-facto watercooler. For me it’s the same as sharing a discussion I heard at work.

My brother and maybe a few of my friends know I participate in one particular messageboard. They know I’m a nerd.

It’s not uncommon for me to say “on my forum…” and relate something that someone wrote here. I will also sometimes just credit “a friend” or similar when referencing something I read here. My close friends know that this one of my online homes, so it’s not unusual to them to hear me reference the place or a discussion here.

I thought Charlie McGee wiped out The Shop.

I’m not addicted either. I can quit any time I want.

My family knows. Sometimes they will ask if I can “ask on the Straight Dope” on some questions or another.

^ same…I am a newbie so the Wrekked-up bunch are very interested in what I am saying or hearing here. I don’t think they know the name of the forum although the reason I know about the ‘Straight Dope’ books is my son was reading them.

My wife is familiar with my interest in SDMB, so I reference it by name when I mention something I have read here. Among friends and co-workers, I just refer to “a discussion forum I read” when I want to mention where I read about something.

I am actually quite famous in my circle of IRL friends because of my “internet friends”. And that’s what I call ya’ll, my internet friends. If they want to know more I reference the SD as a message board I go to, which everyone understands, but never really delves into. Ms. Cups is the most familiar with the inner-workings of the board and recognizes only a handful of names (mostly the people from the wrestling thread).

I hesitate to say the actual name of the board because most people here “dope” and just assume it’s about drugs. They’ll generally understand the reference once I explain the phrase, but there’s always a small bit of time that I get a :dubious:

Daily, but that’s because I live with a long-term Doper.

Outside of that, it really only comes up when I’m talking about how I met my wife. But I don’t generally reference the board by name.

Here is the extent of all my interaction with humankind in real life:

Wife enters room: “I heard this really interesting thing on NPR today, about…”
Me: “Yeah, I read that on The Dope yesterday”

Wife leaves room, I got back to Hearts.

My mentions usually fall into 2 groups: detailed discussions with my family, who know about the board, and more casual discussions with other folks, who get “I was reading the other day” or I was discussing this the other day". I do sometimes also use the phrase, “a friend of mine said…”.

^^That’s me.

Wife knows who and what y’all are. And gets to hear about some of the better topics and comments every day.

To everybody else all y’all are a “discussion” or a “conversation” I was having. When, where, how, and with who remains mysterious.

“News.” Mostly, unless conversation comes into play, here and Reddit is stuff I read on the “news.”
