Doctor! I think I broke my foot!

Okay, I just need to know if this is possible. Yesterday, I was wearing heels and I hit a portion of blacktop that was just like 1/2" lower than the curb, and I went sideways off my shoe (caught myself against the car). It really hurts in one quarter-sized spot on the arch portion of my foot just right of center (on the top). I know feet have a lot of little bones in them. It doesn’t hurt unless I’m standing on it, and I noticed that if I stand on tippy toes (such as if I were wearing heels) it doesn’t hurt.

I figure if it was a sprain or some kind of ligament damage, it would be a wider area of pain. It is concentrated in just this little spot. No swelling, either, but I have a good Grandpa McCoy gimp going on.

If I were to slightly fracture one of those little round bones, would I still be able to walk? Can they do anything for it?

IANAD, but I do know several people who have broken bones in their feet doing less than you did, and some of them didn’t notice it really or thought it was going to go away and waited weeks to see a doctor. Which is not good.

The sideways nature of your motion would lead me personally more towards sprain/strain (IANAD but I was an EMT). Stumbles and falls like this IME were more likely to result in ankle injury than the spot you describe.
Best bet, get thee to an x-ray machine and find out for sure.

I thought about getting it checked out, but it’s not excrutiating or anything. I wonder if I would do myself harm to NOT get it checked, or if the gimp will eventually go away.

You are describing a mechanism that can lead to fractures of the metatarsals. Usually, it’s the fifth metatarsal (the bone on the outside of the foot) that breaks, but it doesn’t have to be.

I’d have it checked out, if it is causing significant pain.

My cats just busted mine. I see them on line for a few bucks, but shipping is twice the cost of the item itself! Does anyone know if any of the major housewares stores or department stores carry them? You know the one I’m talking about. Clear heavy glass with a chrome top and a little metal flap over the pour opening.

SHIT! That was supposed to be a separate thread. Sorry!

Wow. I pretty much pieced together the sugar dispenser and the fracture, then I saw that it was a mistake!

As for your foot, hold it up against your computer monitor:

You’re not going to get reliable advice on whether or not you will do yourself harm on a message board. If you are concerned about it, by all means see a medical professional about it. That’s the only way to get good advice.

I’m going to close this thread.
