Doctor Strange - seen it (open spoilers)

Absolutely true.

Agreed

Unfortunately, purists tend to flip out when existing characters are changed, so they’re stuck between an infinity stone and Thor’s abs.

I doubt they took the building with them, so the movie simply had to have occurred after they put up the “A”.

One thing I wish they would get away from is the “swirly floating hole in the sky with the Big Bad in it” type of ending. I like that the resolution this time wasn’t blowing it up with a nuke or anything like that, but just that setpiece is getting so tedious.

I notice there was no outcry over Mordo being black rather than white.

Just as another data point; not much of a comics guy but thoroughly enjoyed the movie. There’s enough happening to keep your attention throughout and for the most part it was very funny (I agree once or twice the jokes were forced, but OTOH I laughed out loud a number of times, which is rare for me).

It did dawn on me about 2/3 through that the architecture manipulation, while beautiful, was largely pointless: it was generally just shit going on in the background while an essentially 1-dimensional chase takes place. Just a minor gripe though.

The start was the roll eyes part IMO; the bad guys walking in V formation, then kicking the dog with fancy powers. Definitely seen that enough times now.

I saw it last night in IMAX 3D and liked it a lot. Not my favorite Marvel movie but at the least around the top 6.

Sam Lowry:

Well, they replaced one of Thor’s normall all-white supporting cast with an Asian (one of the Warriors Three). Shouldn’t that have counted in their favor?

I found the movie to be one of Marvels lesser films. The folding buildings became distracting, not enhancing. The plot, even for an origin story was kind of shallow, although they did the origin part well. Just the villain was a bit lame. The actors did well, although Cumberbatch left me disappointed, just as he did in the Kahn role. In all his roles, with the exception of Sherlock, he seems to be missing something. In these kind of roles you need to be a little over the top, overact without it being very obvious. The humor seemed forced at times. There were some good bits, but then they got slapstick in some of the most intense parts (Cloak pulling on Strange for longer than it should) . Just didn’t work for me.

You mean like two of the leads of Agents of Shield (not counting all the Asian or mixed-Asian recurring characters played by Parminder Nagra, Mark Dacascos, Maya Stojan, Dichen Lachman)

That, plus the aforementioned Hogun in Thor,Helen Cho in Ulron, Jim Morita in* Captain America *- I think Marvel is not exactly ignoring Asians. More would, of course, be even better.

Well I guess I was wrong. That EW article linked above strongly suggests it wasn’t War Machine because as others said the time line didn’t work.

Didn’t distract me at all.

I liked it a lot but then I also liked Ant-Man far more than most of the other marvel movies so I am clearly an outlier.

I do think someone would be well served to figure out how to make a sling bracelet or a sling choker or hey, figure out how to teleport without an ungainly hunk of metal.

Exactly. No whining about blackwashing and gender swapping. The student sorcerers practicing their mystical katas were a perfectly politically correct mix of diversity, but never good enough I guess. No one mentions Wong, updated from manservant to one of the seniors of the temple, and never shown using martial arts.

I didn’t know who Tilda Swinton was, but I’m a fan now. I loved her facial expressions.

I guess now people are complaining about Ghost in the Shell. Well, everyone but the Japanese themselves who are saying they never expected the main character to be Japanese and it doesn’t need to be. They love that one of their stories is going international.

Hogun of the comic books could be Asian - he has frequently been drawn in a way that could be interpreted as such. He isn’t Aesir.

I think an Asian Ancient One would have been better - there wasn’t any reason to whitewash it. Tilda Swinton was awesome, but Michelle Yeoh would have been equally awesome. Personally, I would have liked to see Jackie Chan - who would have brought a different take on an ancient mystic. That they chose to whitewash it is the sort of unthinking racism Hollywood tends to be guilty of.

And the Ancient One isn’t a commitment to a character - is a one movie character (unless we get flashbacks)

Benedict Cumberbatch’s accent was fine. I didn’t think he sounded American, but he didn’t sound British either. He sounded, to me, like pretentious asshole with money. Since Steven Strange is part of the Marvel line of assholes turned hero, it worked fine.

My problem is that the movie is set in Nepal, and yet none of the characters looked like Nepalis (recognizing that Nepalis vary in ethnicity).

I enjoyed the movie; certainly not among the worst MCU movies. Somewhere in the middle, I’d put it. The SFX were good but over-used. I liked how the final battle against space villain played out but I thought the space villain could have been fleshed out a bit better. He was kind of silly.

One SFX I really liked was the penultimate brawl, between the sorcerers and the evil sorcerers - I thought having the fight play out in and among the destruction of the city block happening simultaneously in reverse was clever and original; at least, I can’t recall every having seen a scene play out in forward- and backward-time at the same time.

Well, for what it’s worth, they did use Nepalese extras. From wiki: “For authenticity, the set was dressed with real food, and populated with dogs, pigeons, and Nepalese extras, many of whom were relatives of people who live on the real Kathmandu street.”

I’m not sure that helps; set a movie in a particular country but give none of the speaking roles to anyone from that country.

What movie did you see? I saw one set in a pan dimensional, multiverse.

Perhaps you stepped out for popcorn during the one-quarter or one-third of the film in which the main character trained at an ashram in Nepal.
