Any thoughts? I know very little about the character, but it looks like Marvel mashing together *Batman Begins, the Matrix *and Inception, headed by Cumberbatch doing Hugh Laurie’s *House *accent. Looks cool.
I love it. It’s certainly something different from the usual superhero movie, and I think that’s great.
Looks great, though I definitely thought, “Oh, Marvel riffs on Christopher Nolan!” How meta.
That looks fun! And yeah, could he sound more like Hugh Laurie in that voice over??
He’s a Brit going for an American accent, he could be doing a lot worse than Hugh Laurie playing Dr. House.
I personally think it’s a terrible accent, but I thought the same with Hugh Laurie, yet America lapped it up without question (in fact with surprised praise when they realised) so clearly my opinion is irrelevant.
The theory he seems to have adopted is, do what works.
I certainly was not expecting a cue-ball Tilda Swinton.
Time and again I’m impressed how Marvel can juggle all these superhero franchises and make each one feel different that the others in tone and feel. Dr. Strange doesn’t look like Ant Man or Captain America or Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m looking forward to this one.
I’m looking forward to this, but danged if you didn’t just make me picture a wisecracking Paul Rudd getting mystical instruction from the Ancient One – as played by Michael Peña, who heard all of this second-hand from some fine fine, like stupid fine chick who’s got mad connects with the peeps behind the curtains, y’know what I’m saying?
So, it is an origins story. I thought that Marvel wasn’t doing those anymore.
I see no reason to object to an origins story done well. What I get annoyed about is when the “origin story” seems to be a formulaic requirement or done and re-done over and over.
Doctor Strange is not as well known as, say, Captain America. I think a well done origin story might be a little necessary for a lot of people.
Yeah, I don’t think it’s out of place to have an origin story for Doctor Strange. I’m a nerd but I know nothing about him whatsoever. Plus, this is the first Marvel film to rely heavy on mysticism/magic (I mean, Thor hand waved all magic away with “they’re so technologically advanced that it seems like magic”).
Usually, I will concede, that origin stories aren’t necessary. We know how Superman came to the planet, Batman’s parents were killed, and Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider.
Yeah, there’s a difference between seeing Thomas and Martha Wayne and/or Uncle Ben being killed for the 1000th time, and showing how a relatively unknown character became who he is for the first time on screen
damnit… get oughta my head.
Trailer is intriguing, although the Matrix and Inception bits are obvious. I read DS a little as a kid but remember very little about him, so I have no objection to a well-done origin story. Cumberpatch is good in just about anything, and this looks like a distinctly different role from Sherlock Holmes and Alan Turing. I’m sure I’ll see the movie unless the reviews are totally sucky.
So Rachel McAdams must be Night Nurse? And now I’m wondering how they’ll get Strange, Stark and her together in a future movie and make some obscure Holmes reference.
I thought Rosario Dawson had been established as Night Nurse? When I saw Rachel McAdams, my first thought was please don’t let her be Clea! Was that Chiwetel Ejifar in there also?
Has Tilda Swinton ever spoken on being the androgynous go-to for every movie? I’m sure it pays the bills but it must suck sometimes. Of course, I haven’t seen every movie she’s ever done. Anyway…
I am starting to look forward to this and I hope it does well. Especially if we can can Umar and Dormammu for part two.
I think people assumed she was, but Marvel never confirmed or denied.
Not really. The character was originally written as Night Nurse but the Daredevil showrunner said that “…the feature side had plans for her down the road.” So they called the character Claire Temple instead of Linda Carter (or the other names). Claire Temple was a doctor in Luke Cage.
Ah. The only time I vaguely recall Night Nurse was Power Man and Iron Fist. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her with Dr. Strange. Which means nothing of course, since Strange had several series of his own as well as the Defenders.
