Doctor Who Christmas 2008 Preview

As part of last night’s Children in Need, the BBC showed the first two minutes of this year’s Christmas special.

Enjoy.

I think you meant to use this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-JAi4CGGM4

It looks interesting.

Hmm. Very interesting. However, I’ll make one prediction right now: that guy is NOT the Doctor. I don’t know how or why, but he ain’t him.

No, that’s not it. The YouTube clip isn’t available in the US due to the BBC’s strange policy of only releasing their content to Brits. I found it through other channels I’m not allowed to discuss here. The clip in question is just over 2 minutes long.

Ack. I’d linked via YouTube thinking the Beeb would let you foreign-types watch. Oh well, give this one a go, else just type - doctor who children in need 2008 - in the YouTube search box.

That worked well.

Who was the actor? I suspect I will not like him if he is the new Doctor. He already appeared to be a arrogant wanker, bad sign.

Do not want that new Doctor. Do not want new companion. Do not want.

That’s David Morrissey, whose name you may have seen suggested as being a potential new Doctor (even before being cast in the Christmas special, IIRC)

Oh he was the arrogant Captain in the *Water Horse *and gets considered for Razzys. Why was he suggested as the Doctor? Is it some redeeming part on a British TV Show? That brief clip reminded of some of the post Tom Baker Doctors that were terrible.

David Morrissey. Which makes this clip from the series Blackpool even more amusing!

Jim, Don’t Panic!

I like how fake-Doctor’s sonic screwdriver appears to be an ordinary screwdriver and that his companion is a Londoner called Rosalita. It appears that the monster is a Cyberman head on a gorilla suit. I’m intrigued, and look forward to watching in the usual post Christmas dinner alcoholic haze.

My first guess was that the Doctor had somehow stumbled onto a movie set where they were making a movie about the Doctor for some reason, but the trailer makes it look like the whole episode is in Victorian times, so maybe not. Still, I stand by my previous prediction. That ain’t him.

Hijack alert:

The doctor appears in 18-whatever, and every gentleman in sight appears to be wearing a hat. The Doctor isn’t.

How rude would that be considered?

The Doctor just wanders about being himself, with justifiable self-confidence. Even in the real world that gets one a long way.

I always thought that the Tennant Doctor acts like the idealised 19th Century British Colonial official on his first trip out to some exotic posting. His wide-eyed amazement at the sights and sounds and the strongest intention of not putting-up with anything that’s not cricket.

“I say, that beastly warlord is just being frightfully awful to those poor villagers. That’s simply not on. I shall jolly well go and have a word with the horrible chap.”

And when words don’t work, he comes back with a division of redcoats and cavalry, or in the Doctor’s case he reverses the polarity of the neutron flow.

As for the preview.

I think it’s a Doctor impersonator, bilking the town with cybermen artefacts and staged attacks, hence the lame cyberhead on a gorilla suit.

Interesting. Not the Doctor, though: too bombastic and theatrical {rather cheekily, he seems to be channeling Colin Baker}. Probably a conman impersonating the Doctor: another rogue Time Agent?

“You there, boy. What day is it?”

“It’s Christmas Eve, sir”

“And what year is it?”

“Are you thick or sumfin’?”

The Doctor has always been a bit like that. He’s the last of his kind though now (OK, the Master etc) but the Universe is still infested by those damned Daleks. I don’t know, the guy burns up all of time and space destroying his own people in order to take down the Enemy, and yet they come.

I’d like to see more of the vengeful Doctor like at the end of Human Nature/Family of Blood. No second chances.

In that spirit I’d like to see on screen the Time War - a fleet of battle-TARDIS assaulting the Dalek armada, and the Eighth Doctor having to decide how to end the war.

I just came. Thanks.

I’m getting sick to death of the same enemies, over and over again. Dalaks and Cybermen. Bleagh.

Me too. By fuck.
