Doctor Who Series Five: UK pace thread [edited title]

I, for one, am in agreement with Walker in Eternity in many respects. I’ve considered every episode this season sub-par in one way or another. It reminds me a lot of the Sylvester McCoy years and that’s not a good thing. We’re die-hards at our house so we’ll be watching no matter what, but I would definitely like to see something meatier come down the pipe soon.

Just chiming to disagree with most people here, I think this season has been great. It’s all about the way the character’s interact with each other.

Ep 1: Fantastic introduction to Amy, the way the new Doctor is unreliable and different…
Ep 2: Was about hard decisions. The doctor was forced into making an impossible decision, but Amy’s courage saved the day. Also the way most people chose to forget? And those things watching everyone? Damn creepy.

Mandy: You sound Scottish.
Amy: I am Scottish! And what's wrong with that? Scotland's gotta be around here somewhere.
Mandy: No. They wanted their own ship.
Amy: Good for them! Some things never change

Ep 3: OK spitfire’s were stupid but lots of people loved them - and the posters were great! Also showed how much the Doctor couldn’t control himself in the face of the Daleks.

Amy: Well, what does he expect us to do now?
Churchill: KBO, of course.
Amy: What?
Churchill: Keep Buggering On.

Ep 4: The Angels can attack you through the TV! Imagine how many kids that freaked out. Which is after all the point of Who.

"Mr Grumpy Face"

Ep 5: The scene with Amy in the woods? The Clerics death?
“Of course she’s scared, she’s dying!”

Ep 6:
The Doctor: She was frightened, I was frightened. But we survived, and the relief of it, so she kissed me.
Rory: And you kissed her back?
The Doctor: No. I kissed her mouth.
Rory: [sarcastically] Funny.

This season has had some of the funniest and scariest lines of who ever.

Goodness me :frowning:

There was me thinking that I really quite enjoyed Vampires of Venice, pretty good for a Monster of the Week episode, I thought, and very funny.

Ah.

Exactly. This was a filler ep, meant to be light hearted and cheesy, in a grand tradition of cheesy silly eps. The arc plot line service was slight - mainly the there is more to Rory than might appear at first blush, just like the Tardis is bigger on the inside, and that not only does he really love Amy, but that Amy really does love him. The Doctor she is infatuated with.

First ep very very above par. Both parts of Angels excellent. Belly a few good bits. Daleks, dumb. Vampires, vhat do ya vant, it’s a filler. This is Doctor Who, don’t take it too seriously.

And the crack arc at least has potential to surpass Bad Wolf as a theme.

If I’m going to die I might as well look like a Peruvian folk band, too.

Sometimes Doctor Who takes a turn off the road towards the deeply, deeply strange. I think it did tonight. Have no clue whether this was a great or terrible episode, it was maybe both. Or is it?

I enjoyed mixing the tenses up so badly in my last post, haha. Or have we dreamt it?

The episode didn’t grip me, but rather than deeply strange, I think that more this was more a holodeck-meets-Q type episode.

So what are UK kids now scared of? 1) Statues, yeah I guess 2) the dark, traditional innit 3) television, well it’s for the best, really.

Sleeping, you say?

I await the pillow-milk monster.

There was a lot of Q in that. I didn’t buy the Doctor’s story for a second - hey it’s some magic psychic beans, lol. looks down at console Fuuck!

Good story from Simon Nye though, had to look up to check it was him. I’m intrigued by the forthcoming Richard Curtis episode.

I’ve got gigantic breasts made of lentils

No - thank you for sharing that with us.

I thought this episode was great - compelling and genuinely interesting concept, and I had no idea what was going to happen. Regarding him looking in the console at the end, what was that about? I wondered if it meant something but didn’t quite get it.

Oh, and a count me as someone who was very glad that the cold star turned out to not actually exist - the thought of the Whoniverse containing such a massive violation of the basic principles of thermodynamics blows my mind more than I can cope with.

bean bags?

I agree, it was kind of a holodeck episode. That doesn’t mean it was bad, but won’t be an episode I watch again.

I wonder if we’ll ever get to see the Tardis’ swimming pool?

In a series crammed full of great banter, this one was overflowing with sparkling dialogue.

I kind of liked the story, though it didn’t really make a lot of sense and had something of a disappointing ending.

I thought it was the return of the Master.

The reflection in the console at the end was of the DreamLord looking back at him, then it changed back into the Doctor again. Implying “he’ll be back”! dramatic chords

Incidentally, Toby Jones was effortlessly brilliant.

Because instead of seeing his own reflection he saw the dreamlord’s.

errrr :dubious:
