Doctor Who Series Five: UK pace thread [edited title]

I think you’ll find it’s spelled “vworp.”

If only that was a joke.

I noticed an interesting blooper in The Lodger. The actress, Daisy Haggard, had a rather personal problem with the scene where she runs downstairs and flees before the time machine explodes.

It wasn’t her feet. She didn’t trip. It was, uh her boobs. Seems they bounced a bit as Daisy ran. Daisy must of been aware of the problem. Because she rather suddenly grabs her coat and holds it shut as she runs.

Coming out the door. A fine sight for any red blooded male.

Oh my. This is a kids show. Better cover up quick!

It’s all rather silly. Daisy’s bosom isn’t that large. I doubt any children would be blinded. If this was American tv, the actress would be so top heavy that she could barely run, and there would be no coat. Luckily, silicone doesn’t bounce very well, and there wouldn’t be any injuries. ROFL

Agreed on both counts. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this episode, yet I did and it sets up the last two episodes brilliantly.

Sadly, as you say, the Confidential was complete rubbish.

So… next week. The Pandoricum. Daleks, Cybermen, Toclaphane, and more. Sounds like a reboot to me.

And there’s some things I just can’t do on a phone. If someone would report this to get my spoiler tag fixed, that’d be nice.

Couple comments about this one.

First off, I am shocked about the lack of people botching about the “true love” ending. Maybe in the American thread…

I too thought that Craig looked like Andy Richter, especially in one scene where he was angrily stomping down the hall. I also noticed that Girlfriend was clutching her top shut at the end. How rude!

The episode itself was a nice self-contained one. It was nice to see someone take a bullet for the doctor and NOT get vaporized/erased/somethinged.

I was surprised to see the headbutt on a Brit show - I thought that was one of the things they were very strict on, because it’s so imitable by kids. Has that changed, or was this different because it wasn’t done for the sake of violence?

Now, on to larger things…

My theory starts looking even more accurate. The Doctor typically brazenly will walk into the Lion’s Den without fear. It’s pretty much what he does every time. But instead, in this case he’s totally terrified. I think The Doctor has very little self confidence at the moment because he keeps failing.

We’ve also got Amy learning to fly The Tardis, and it was a big enough part of the episode that I think it’s significant. Like I said two weeks ago, The Crack is going to be caused by the destruction of The Tardis, and soon enough (remember she was standing right next to The Doctor when he destroyed The Tardis to escape the dream) Amy is going to be the one to do it.

A previous poster already let something from the spoiler slip, but I’ll be good…
So, what is in the box? What would everyone from River Song to the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans, and all those others mentioned want?

What is, probably, the most valuable thing in the universe and all of space and time?

I’m probably wrong, but I’m going with a Tardis. Or maybe the original Tardis.

The question of the season will be, of course, what did The Doctor tell Amy when she was nine? Something important enough he was willing to cross his own timeline to do it.
Assuming that that theory is correct, of course, but the more I think about it the more I think there is something bigger going on. Also there has been some genuine time travel going on here, rather than just the TARDIS popping up at different times - River Song is one example (in that their interactions happen at different times on their personal timelines) and also in this episode where Amy was told to write out the card for the shop window because that’s what had led the Doctor to the flat in the first place. So with all that I can definitely see some timey-wimey stuff featuring in the finale storyline.

Yup. Moffatt gets time travel. Between that and his selection of Smith (to which the most positive responses were “eew, but I trust Moffatt so here’s hoping”), which most seem to now view as a VERY good choice, I’m pretty happy with things so far.

Of course if we get Daleks next week, I can look forward to lots of bitching about the new color schemes. Which is interesting, seeing as how i’ve got a poster on my wall from the Peter Cushing movie with red and blue Daleks…

Did anyone else think that the building used for that episode looked strangely like Martha’s home that the Master blew up when she, the Doctor, and Captain Jack had just arrived back on earth from the end of the universe???

Possibly spoilerish speculation…
…well, I have to say, that so far this series of Doctor Who has been, in the words of the Doctor, fantastic.

I did struggle with the early episodes though. The pacing was a bit disjointed: things didn’t hang together and while the episodes were good, they let me down a bit.

Well, in the last couple of weeks I’ve been rewatching and I must admit on second viewing the episodes are a hell of a lot better than I remembered. I realized that the episodes from the RTD era were “paced” differently: and getting used to the new pace for me at least took another viewing.

The other thing I realized (and this realization hit me like a ton of bricks) was that we are not watching several self-contained episodes: we are watching one big long story. Everything is related. There are no stand-alone episodes this season. Everything has a meaning.

Moffat has put a perception filter over this series. Remember when River and the Doctor suddenly realized that the statues all only had one head? The answer was staring them in the face the whole time but they just couldn’t see it.

The answer is staring us in the face. There are clues in every episode. Taunting us. Smacking us upside in the chin.

My prediction is that after the Big Bang everybody will be smacking themselves on the forehead going “that was so obvious!” There will be no “cheats” or last minute revelations: everything will be logical.

I have and others have spotted subtle clues throughout the series, from the Duck Pond, to the “Remember” buttons on the Beast Below, to the flashbacks which play out differently in different episodes, to the flashbacks to the old Doctors, to some of the dramatic speeches the Doctor has given this season. Leadworth is an anagram of “Dr Who Late.” the repetition of the words “Amy’s time” in Flesh and Stone and in the Pandorica trailer. Clues clues clues…

And the clues are mixed in with red herrings so while I think I’ve got what is going on all sorted out in my head the honest truth is I haven’t got the whole thing sorted out in my head. Its like that extra room in the corner or the time machine up the stairs: you know its there but you just can’t see it…

Possible real spoilers below: do not click if you don’t want to know anything at all what so ever about the Pandorica Opens and the Big Bang:

On another forum there is a link to some early concept art that reveals something key to the finale. It is should be easily found on google so I won’t link to it here. But if the spoiler pics are true, my theory pans out, and this will be the coolest series wrap up ever. It puts events in the Eleventh Hour in perspective: especially his wrap speech to th Atraxi. I really really reccomend you don’t seek out the spoilers.

Just as long as both the Daleks and the Cybermen are utterly wiped out with no possibility that they will ever return. Man, I’m sick of them. Doctor Who is always better without the old stand-bys.

Anyone else notice the Doctor had his blue=tipped sonic screwdriver? Or do I need to adjust my set?

Never mind. That was probably from before he lost it.

Sorry about missing the edit window, too.

No, no, no, it’s not a “headbutt”, it’s the Galifreyan Mind-Meld, the Vulcans have a patent on the “nice” mind-meld technique, so the Time Lords had to create a workaround

I know the BBC refused to show certain commercials that featured headbutts, but I don’t know about a blanket ban. Unlike many fictional depictions, however, this was shown as being very painful for the butt-er as well as the butt-ee, and something he wouldn’t want to do again.

If you’re referring to the orbs shown in the trailer, I think those are Sontaran craft. The scale is all wrong for Toclafane.

Just a wee warning: There are some extraordinarily spoilery publicity photos out there on some of the usual sites. Usually these are just the ones released for the upcoming episode, intended to whet the appetite. Unfortunately, this time someone has broken the press embargo for the final episode, and these aren’t supposed to be seen until after this week’s one. I wish I hadn’t seen them. Be aware!

I’ve been pretty much lukewarm on Smith for most of the season. And from the teaser I expected this last episode to be equally lukewarm.

Upon some rumination I’ve realized that I really am liking Smith, and thought this was a fantastic episode. It was fun, the one-shot characters were well done, and it quite nicely set up the finale.

I’m a comparatively new Who fan - have we ever seen the head-butt mind-meld thing before? I’m not going to bother to ask why the Doctor didn’t just use, y’know, words, but it seemed kind of odd to me.

No, it’s never been used before. Not in exactly the same way. It has been shown in the past that he has mild telepathic powers. His ability to speak the language wherever he goes is a form of telepathy. In a story where he met two other versions of himself, the three of them could communicate by telepathy. And in a couple of stories The Master was able to plant thoughts in The Doctor’s head by telepathy. But the head-butt power is a new one.

If someone told you they are alien, would you believe them?

It reminded me of when The Doctor read Reinette’s mind (& vice versa) in The Girl in the Fireplace, only you know, not as gentle.

I disagree; I’m looking forward to seeing them again. But I do think they should be passed over for a season or two. Rumour has it that the Great Intelligence and the Yetis will be back next season, and they’ll be fine opponents for the Doctor.
