I’ve said it before, but the emotional reactions from Rory and Amy (and even River Song) about the relationships in this series is the weakest point of the season. Finding out that your best friend was your daughter would make anybody sit and think for a few minutes… but not those two.
And you’re exactly right: 50yo Amy didn’t once ask about her daughter, not even a “Tell me that you spent that time not rescuing me, rescuing her?”
Slightly off topic, but I have to says this, 50 is not old damn it!!!
And no, I’m not close to being 50, but that still bugs me. Thank you.
As for the older Amy. She’s been trapped on that planet longer than younger Amy has been alive. I’m surprised she remembered what Rory looked like.
And ask for not asking about River, she might have realized that even though for her it was 36 years, for them it was a few minutes. So she knew they didn’t have time to look for River.
Not really true… the Tardis is a time machine and all, they could’ve been gone for years and returned a few minutes later, subjectively. After all, in season 5, she left with the Doctor the night before her wedding, spent days traveling around the universe, and returned the very same night to put the moves on him (IIRC).
But her baby wasn’t even important enough to be the shared thought between her younger self and her? The (bleep)ing MACARENA was more worthy of a mention than her child?
(yeah yeah, spot the hormonal mother getting her knickers in a twist over the lack of give-a-shit Amy and Rory have shown for their abducted baby throughout the past two episodes!)
To be honest (and, I guess, sexist) imho I think the lack of emotional reaction in regards to the baby is due to the fact that the scripts were written by men.
That, and that they were written as stand alones, not by Moffat. Moffat will take those and throw in some bits to serve the needs of the arc, either as clues or as misdirections, but the main writing was done by others. Yeah, he could direct them to include some aspects of that, but the lack of that is on him, not the writers of the eps.
All relative. To a child - or even someone in their twenties - it is. To me as a thirty seven year old I still feel it is. To someone in their forties, maybe not.
There is no official rule as to what is old. Just personal opinion.
Of course there is. Old is older than me, and young is younger than me. (Say maybe by 10 - 20% of my lifetime so far.) That never changes. The numbers of people in each set, now that changes a lot.
When you were 5 someone who was 4 was young and someone who was 6 was old; at 50 plus someone has to be at least over 60 to be old and 40 and under is a mere babe. Now to the Doctor there are very few who qualify as old …
Back on track, in “Day of the Moon” when Amy saw pictures of herself raising River, there were no pictures of Rory, were there? So does she raise River by herself? Or are the pictures faked?
And in “The Eleventh Hour” prisoner zero said that the Pandorica will open and silence will fall. Both of those seemed to happen, so I’m as I said earlier, the doctor hearing a whisper that silence will fall, and then the TARDIS explosing wiping out the entire universe (except for the Earth, which would be wiped out eventually) makes me think that maybe that was silence falling. Of course there’s a question involved, so It will be interesting when that is revealed.
As to the fact that our intrepid heroes haven’t been focused exclusively on the search for baby Melody: I’ve always assumed that we do not see all of the Doctor’s travels, only the most interesting of them. In fact, except in two-part episodes or spots where it made explicit that the action picks up immediately following that last fade out, I assume that there’s stuff going on that we’re not privy to.
His time with Amy and Rory has shown this a couple of times, namely before the beginning of this series, when they were waiting for him and also in the gap before Let’s Kill Hitler. I would like to think that the reason we don’t hear Amy and Rory harping on the fact that their child is still MIA is because time was spent searching, but to no avail. At this point, I think they’ve kind of given up and are just continuing their travels.
It would be nice to have it mentioned, at least in passing, but there it is.
I’m not sure that “searching for baby Melody” is something that they’re doing, or would be wise for them to do. They KNOW what happens to their daughter - she grows up to be River Song, who all three of them have had past interactions with. Finding her as an infant and raising her themselves would distort theirs and the Doctor’s timeline in ways that would probably break the Laws of Time in a way that makes “two Amys in the same place at the same time” look like a routine traffic infraction.
Exactly - I don’t know why so many people in this thread keep overlooking this point.
They don’t find Melody, she is raised by the Silence to be a weapon against the Doctor. This has already happened, it can’t be changed. They haven’t “given up looking” as if they can’t be arsed, they’re realised that looking would be futile, it can’t work. The Doctor even said to them that they had to accept they wouldn’t get the chance to raise their daughter. Yeah it sucks, but that’s the way it happens sometime.
I see what others are saying about how casually they’re shrugging this off, but I’d point out that Amy didn’t even know she was pregnant until her true self woke up on Demon’s Run, and she had all of a couple of weeks to bond with the baby before it was taken away. Yes the maternal link is strong but surely not so much as to emotionally cripple Amy for the rest of her life for the sake of two or so weeks with a baby she didn’t even know she was going to have.
How do we know the baby in those pictures is River/Melody? Maybe the baby is River’s daughter, being raised by grandma as River goes gallivanting across all time and space and/or spends her time in the Stormcage (when she feels like it).
You’re assuming that’s baby Melody but we don’t, in fact, know that.
In which case the bad guys may have won - if Amy and River junior are in a place controled by the Silents.Cuz they are getting to shape another Timelord.
