My daughter has a 2005 Grand Caravan,
Her problem is this van is shifting up and down all the time on some days and some days all is well.
I drove it 100 plus miles today and had 30 -40 miles of flawless operation and then the erratic shifting where the van would jump from Drive To Over D and the tach would jump from the 2000rpm to 3000rpm up and down. And when decelerating the thing would downshift into low at 40 MPH and then jump dack into 2nd or 3rd.
This was taken into a reputable repair shop 2 times and the trany default settings were redone and the modulator was replaced, The fluid and filter was changed also.
When the van was in overdrive and operating good I shifted the selector to 3rd (out of OD) a couple times and the van would remain in OD. Sometimes the tach would only jump up and down 2-3 Hundred RPM’s and every jump of the tach could be felt in the van.
Has 123,000 miles, and there is a light duty trailer hitch and a 16 foot fishing boat has been towed occasionally.
Anyone have a WAG as to what might be causing this??
a 41TE? check out the solenoid pack. there are rebuild kits.
oh, and has the fluid ever been changed? these transaxles require fluid conforming to the ATF+3 or ATF+4 spec, if you put any generic “automatic transmission fluid” in it you’re going to have problems.
Thank You jz,
when i looked up the trany i see it is the 41TE but i did enter the wrong year. This van is a 2006.
Yes the Fluid and filter was change last year when this problem first surfaced and the trany reset according to the repair shop. Now this shop is an independent but the two mechanics that own it were both employed for 10 years at a Chrysler dealership and do trany rebuilds here in this shop.
So that being said, if we were to take it in to a dealership what could change as these guys were their best. :dubious:
I am certainly going to stop in tomorrow and talk about the fluid used although this issue predated the fluid change but also the solenoids.
I had an issue a few years back on my '99 Dodge Ram 1500 where the trany would slip into neutral upon acceleration, but that was just short of 300K and i added a couple different Hocus Pocus miracle in a can to no avail and then used a half can of Sea Foam tranny treatment( couple months between treatments) and the problem went away. This isn’t my car so i am not going to add anything just yet as this is a really crazy problem.
