For the life of me I don’t even know if this candy exists, and I don’t remember having it ever, but I’m craving it like mad. Does it exist?
I’m craving something honey-flavored, maybe even made out of some sort of dehydrated honey or god only knows what. It’s also crunchy, but not crunchy like crisp bread or crackers, but more like celery in that I get the sense that the candy is thick-ish and has a crunchy consistency all the way through rather than being thin or being crispy only on the outside like toasted bread. It’s also sweet but not cloyingly so, and dry rather than oozing honey, but it’s not like breakfast-cereal dry and more like skittles dry.
Has my brain imagined a candy like this in order to torment me, or is there a chance that I’ve ever eaten something like this in real life?
Holy shit that was quick, and you may very well be right. One of my close friends when I was going to college was from buffalo, and although that was way back in the foggy mists of time, for some reason that candy sounds familiar. Coooooould be. Perhaps my brain has not just invented something in order to torment me (any more than usual at least).
Thanks much.
Still not 100% though, so if anybody else thinks they’ve found it, please post.
I was going to suggest törökméz, which is this Hungarian confection. (Literally translates as “Turkish honey.”) I don’t know how to describe its texture exactly. It kind of does that thing cotton candy does when you bite into it. It’s definitely crunchy on the outside, but as you bite in and your saliva intermingles with it, it kind of dissolves into sweet honeyness. That link also has links to two other candy bars that are similar to it. The Crunchy car (in the UK and Canada) and Violet Crumble (Australia.)
Mother of wombats, that’s it!
I spent a semester living in London and I loved Crunchies but I’d forgotten everything about them but the name. Thank you. Both you and the Dope rock.
(Now to find a way to get Crunchies in Texas…)
I was going to mention honeycomb, which is what we call the inside of the Crunchie bar and Violet Crumble bars here in Australia. AFAIK it’s not actually made solely with honey though - you can easily make it on the stove with sugar, honey, water and bicarb.
Probably not what you’re looking for, but I love the crunchy sesame seed candies from Turkey (or is it Greece) you can find in the foreign foods section, or bulk foods section, in grocery stores. I believe they’re made with honey. There’s another form with sesame seeds and nuts like almonds and cashews mixed in.
Not sure if this is right, but could it be Bit O’Honey?
Part of me thinks it was more taffy-like, but it could have been crunchy. It’s been many many years since I’ve seen it.
For that matter, it’s worth checking the international section of the grocery store. They often stock imported candy there, at least in the ones around here.
If you ever visit MA go to Demoulas or to Market Basket in NH (both grocery chains are owned by the same family) - they sell these at all the deli counters.
