Does All of Michigan Suck Now?

If you have a linky for this, I would appreciate it.

Here’s one. and here’s another.

Okay, olives, I’m with you on the Middle Eastern food, but Mexican food? Mexican food in Michigan suuuuuucks. I’m actually not even sure what you’re talking about. Where can I find some good Mexican food in Ann Arbor?

Seriously, tell me. I would kill for some good Mexican food.

Growing up, I ate at Matador in Taylor, about a 30 minute drive from Ann Arbor.

It’s greasy, but it is definitely tastes more authentic (read: not cookie-cutter Tex-Mex). I don’t know if you would find it “good,” but I always enjoy it. Their tacos are deep fried and wonderful.

Mexicantown in Detroit has a large Hispanic community and several popular restaurants such as Xochimilco or Mexican Village. I haven’t been there that much, but what I remember was good.

I still remember visiting Detroit in the early 80’s. Went to the Renaissance Center which I guess was suppose to be a symbol of GM. Drove around looking at architecture and somehow managed to end up around Tiger Stadium. At that point red lights meant nothing to me.

Can’t imagine what it’s like with the collapse of General Motors.

Not Ann Arbor, Ypsi. Or barring that, Southwest Detroit. You have to go where the immigrants are!

(One I remember is Taquería la loma in Ypsilanti.)

When I think of states, there are some that I would NEVER want to visit, much less live in (Texas, North Dakota, Delaware, Missouri) - for various reasons, like bad weather, heat, or desolate wastelands. There are other states I would very much like to visit (Massachusetts for Cape Cod, California, the Carolinas) and Michigan has always sounded like a beautiful place to me. I live not far from Lake Ontario, and it is awesome - so there’s the Great Lakes. It just has a nice association in my own mind. That’s why I like my OPI nail polish, “Skinny Dippin’ in Lake Michigan” - I’d like to do that!

Thank you very, very much!

You guyssssss, I don’t have a car! I’m an impoverished grad student! If I have to actually drive to get there, it doesn’t count.

I will look up Taqueria la Loma, though. In theory, I should be able to get around Ypsi on AATA, although I never actually do it.

There is a Mexican place near cork town that starts with an X and sounds like Sasymoto, that is AWESOME. It is always packed.

The Redundancy Department of Redundancies would like to have a word with you.

Out near the end of the Keweenaw is Mt. Bohemia, the best powder tree skiing between the east and the west. To the northwest is the lovely wilderness of Isle Royalethat I can see from here in Thunder Bay, ON. Aside from the very scenic Superior shores of da UP, the less said about Michigan, the better. When I worked on a great lakes freighter, Detroit was the only port where we were not permitted off the boat.

I always wondered what a Ypsilanti was. Now I know.

When I was an impoverished grad student 12-15 years ago, I lived in Ypsilanti and commuted to Ann Arbor. (And yes, AATA has three routes that go from the main AA station to downtown Ypsi) We ate all the time at La Fiesta Mexicana. Food was good, service was up-and-down, and it was BYOB (but located next door to a liquor store, so you can pop next door for a six). I haven’t eaten there in years, because I’m much closer to the restaurants in SW Detroit, but the place is certainly worth a try. Their tamales are recommended.

Then ya can’t say that Mexican food in all of Michigan sucks if you’re talking about walking distance! :stuck_out_tongue:

I also remember visiting Detroit in the early '80s with my school’s business office education club (boec). I distinctly remember standing in front of a huge window at the Ren Center Hotel, looking out onto the city at night, and our teacher/chaparone warning us that “six people down there will die tonight, don’t let it be you!” Kind of scary at 14.

That’s most likely the previously mentioned Xochimilco. My preference has always been across the street at El Zocalo. They had this flaming cheese appetizer that was artery clogging heaven.

Sabor Latino is awesome. It’s on Main St.

Especially since they expanded and added a little more latino to their sabor.

Mmmm, columbian emapanadas…

Oh man, how could I forget about that place. It is awesome. Plus you can grab some good German beer next door at The Heidleberg!

Polish restaurants around Detroit. Try "Under the Eagle’ It is pretty expensive for Polish food but very good. My wife likes the Ducks blood soup at “Three Brothers”.
Then we have Paczkis.
