Does anyone actually SAY "Woot!"?

(This is a record-breaking day for me as far as starting threads goes.)

I’m reading a novel in which the teenage protagonist says “Woot!” in a couple of places.

I’ve seen it in an online context, and I get the idea of what it means, but I’m not around teenagers enough to know: Do people SAY “Woot!” or is it just something you would type while online?

A gal I used to work with was married to a guy she called “Woot” but I think it was more of a nickname. I know a Wooten and some call him Woot.

And then there’s Hoot Gibson.

My daughter is 16. She and her friends do use “w00t!” in a variety of ways:

“We’re having lima bean casserole for dinner tonight.”

“Woot.”

Or:

“Here’s twenty bucks, you can go to that concert you wanted to see this weekend.”

"w00t!!"

Interesting. How are the zeroes pronounced?

I’m a fairly young whippersnapper, and while I don’t personally (unless I’m being sarcastic) actually say it, I do know people who do.

The same “oo” sound as in “broom”.

I’m 25, and I use it in casual context. (Though I’m horrified someone would use it in a novel – ugh).

I can’t believe I’m using my 1000th post on W00t. Oy.

Just guessing here: WOTE or WOAT or WOHT as opposed to wuh-zero-t, but now that I try to pronounce the latter version, maybe it could be like Wuzzie Rote.

I’d bet money it’s more like woot though.

Hmm, OK then, if youse say so. It still looks weird to me. What’s next, hearing "u r teh suxx0rz!!!11!11one!1 " at the mall?

How about on Jerry Springer for a true clash of cultures?

coughs, looks embarassed

I use it ironically. It does lead to some consternation, though, because I picked up the usage from a message board that my wife and IRL friends don’t visit – so they all think I’m dopey when I say it, even though I then take pains to explain – irony!

My wife says it. But not in a totally serious way.

“Jerry Springer” and “culture” used in the same sentence = Does Not Compute.

I’ve been trying to say “Woot!” convincingly here alone in my office, and I can’t make it work. “Woo-hoo!” yes. “Woot!” no way.

Maybe if you scroonch up your face and try to look like a train it will work.

I say woot. I have friends who say it too.

We also say “teh suck”, “woohoo”, and “doh”.

Heck, I use prolly, dint, dropt, musta, gonna, and wanna in conversation and in writing.

I type it in the chat box when I win a hand at online poker sometimes. Not sure where I got the habit from though.

I use it when conversing with my daughters and gaming friends. I’m 46, I also use D’oh!, Yoink, Tender and Narf!

why did I just admit that?

So w00t doesn’t rhyme with boot?

Tender?

Because that would be wrong on several levels.

I, myself, say “w00t, as they say.”
