Does anyone besides Apple make clear colored monitors yet?
When they first came out a few years ago (the teal ones), I thought every clone maker in the world would realize it was going to be a hit and come out with PC monitors in teal.
I’ve got an off-brand monitor now, and if that company had made a clear colored housing, they would now own the monitor upgrade market.
Nope.
Then when 5 colors came, I was sure someone would catch on.
Nope.
Now they have like 10 colors and nobody else has caught on.
I think HP and Compaq have minor coloring tacked on to the cpu, but it’s the monitor that Apple is selling and everyone is loving.
And the funny thing is, before IBM brought us the original PC in beige, every monitor company made several colors. VT-100’s were blue. Direct monitors were purple, NCR made red and green casings.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re crappy monitors, though.
There’s also a company somewhere that does PC peripherals encased in wood so that you can have a nice burl walnut keyboard, mouse and monitor rather than parking cheap plastic on top of your nice expensive desk. I think they do wood cases, too, but I don’t even want to think about how bad the heat dissipation probably is.
The problem with others doing this is that Apple OWNS the rights to clear cased computers/monitors and sues the hell out of anyone that tries to infringe on that.
If you want clear/colored-see-through computers/monitors you need to buy a mac.
I seriously doubt that the rights to translucent plastic moniters is going to hold up if anyone cares to challenge them on it. They could proably keep the general imac shape, but transulcent plastic is a bit broad, methinks.
Of course, I dont see why anyone would want a tacky bathtoy-looking moniter, but that’s just me. If I was going to get a mac, the G4 color system is much better, I think.
There are a couple of companies that do the aforementioned wooden moniter bezels, mice and keyboards. (Never heard of a case, but it wouldn’t suprise me) A couple of others do some nice black or charcoal cases and peripherals, and have for years.
Some of the new flatscreen designs are pretty neat.
Me, I’m more of an 80’s type. I could see a nice charcoal color, maybe with some chrome and gunmetal highlights. Maybe a bit of neon somewhere.

Dang, Ura-Maru, I was hoping you would do each of those posts in a different color. Alas…
Just FYI, Makes AS/400s in black with color vents. These aren’t little vents, they’re big ones, so they’re pretty visible. So far I have seen red, yellow and blue.
There was a company that tried a Wintel knock-off of the iMac with translucent monitors. They were sued by Apple, but that was probably more because it was almost a complete knock-off of the iMac. The computer was called “eMachine” and it featured a very similar shape and color scheme. That may have been enough to make others think twice…
That said, a relative of mine has an HP system that has a monitor with some very dark (almost black) translucent accent panels.
