DOes anyone do paint-by-number?

My stepfather is 90 and wants to try paint by number. The one he bought has color mixing and tiny areas to paint and is very intimidating for a first effort. Does anyone have a recommendation for an easier one that I can buy on Amazon? Several say they’re for beginners, but looking at them, they still look pretty complicated.

Thanks!

Perhaps you could try adult coloring books rather than painting. They are a thing these days, and there are thousands to choose from. Some of them are very creative.

He can use colored pens rather than painting, and each book usually has many pages of pictures.

There are also many easy and large print adult coloring books.

Also, depending on exactly what your stepfather is looking for and how comfortable he is with technology, there are paint by number apps.

You touch the color, then you touch the section on the screen. If you have access to a printer, I’m sure you could print them out after you’re done (again, if that’s what you’re looking for). No color mixing, no chance of accidentally putting the wrong color somewhere, just filling in a picture with color. And portable.

I don’t think he needs simple, although I’ll show him the coloring books. He’s recently been doing small wooden miniatures, and he wanted to try the paintings as a change of pace. He’s capable of detailed work, and still very sharp mentally. But since this is his first attempt at any kind of painting, he needs something that will teach him how to do it before he jumps into the kind with 36 colors and then mixing those colors.
