Korn and Limp Bizkit repulse me. But the thing that I hate most about them is that they are so adamant in feigning legitimacy. The way I see it, MTV is to music as the WWF is to sports. And the bands that are featured regularly on MTV (with a few notable exceptions whose videos MTV plays to lend a certain degree of legitimacy to themselves) have no more right to call themselves legitimate artists than WWF Superstars have to call themselves legitimate athletes. Sure, they walk, talk, and look like athletes, maybe they once were athletes, but now they’re just in a different business. It’s the same way with the Superstars of TRL, a group of which Limp and Korn are somewhat of the dark princes. Maybe both of those bands strived for legitimacy at some time, but now their only interests are writing songs that will spawn TRL videos, selling records, and doing stupid embarrassing promotions for MTV. They’re no different or better than Britney Spears (well, probably worse than Britney, 'cause they don’t look quite as good), NSYNC, or anyone else.
As far as their music goes, it pisses me off when they try to assert that they’re some kind of “pioneers.” They just rip off the Chili Peppers (and they’re not half as good). Fred Durst is an intelligent songwriter? Give me a break. The same people that think Fred Durst is smart are the ones who think that guy from Rage Against the Machine is a genius.
I generally don’t care about limp bizkit. I like their reworking of “faith”, because it is such a funny contrast to the origional song. But Fred, cut the crap. Rising out of a giant toilet kind of sets the stage for his maturity. Grow up.
Hey! I like Rage Against the Machine! I know everyone thinks they are flaming hypocrites, and they don’t deserve to live, but at least they try to have a message. Also, they are the only band I know of that makes sure it’s merchandise is sweatshop-free. Try that, NSYNC.
I like Limp Bizkit’s first cd. The lyrics were stupid, but the music and the way the lyrics were delivered actually sounded good. Their new cd is just shit, though. Fred is a whiny little boy who wouldn’t get any if he wasn’t in a band. I knew that Limp Bizkit was as good as dead when I saw that they were on tour with Kid Rock.
Kid Rock is a pop star posing as a rocker. Apparently he thinks that it doesn’t matter what the hell you say as long as you shout it. The sad thing is that lots of people I know like him. Why do people have to be so goddamn stupid?
Korn is all right. They seem kind of fake sometimes, but I like a lot of their songs. The perfect scenario would be for Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit to die in a fiery double tour bus crash. To top it all off, it would be great if the tabloids dug up something about Kid and Fred being gay lovers.
I’m gonna take the middle road here and say that I don’t mind Limp Bizkit. Now, I’m probably not going to run out and buy a CD, but a few of their songs are OK. (For the record, “Nookie” is a kinda fun song). Durst was much better spinning disks behind Everlast (where’s your sense of history Teenagers?) but most of their music isn’t that offensive.
Korn isn’t awful as well, and I can tolerate a few of their songs as long as Mr. Davis isn’t doing that Exorcist talking-in-tongues shit.
Kid Rock, on the other hand, is merely Jessica Simpson for the latently homosexual crowd. This guys shit isn’t even interesting. The “smoking dope, smacking ho’s” lyrical genre had its ouvre about 1992, and while it was fresh and interesting back when NWA was doing it, Kid Rock just looks plain silly. I have much more respect for say, Dynamite Hack, which is consciously self-satyrical in their cover of Eazy-E’s “Boyz N’ Da Hood” than I fo for Kid Rock, who expects me to take him seriously. Please.
As an amateur Rock music historian, I would put Limp Bizkit and Korn in the “Warrant” level of musical influence, but Kid Rock falls squarely in the “Winger” level. That is, while their all forgetable, at least the former show shome signs of talent. The later doesn’t.
Does it really matter whether the musicians are poseurs or not? Whether they struggled through years of adversity starving in the back of a van and selling crack to buy their instruments or whether they were auditioned by a suit in LA. If you don’t like the music, you don’t like the music. If you like, hey, nothing wrong with that. What does it matter whether they’re fake? It’s performance for goodness’ sake.
Limp Bizkit just strike me as sort of similar to G n’R et al. Not really very good or very original, but kinda fun when you’re a sexually frustrated sixteen year-old
What does spinning disks behind Everlast have to do with music history? In the context of rock history, House of Pain isn’t exactly what I would consider one of your major groups.
I cannot stand Korn, Limp Bizkit, or just about anything else they play on the “Modern Rock” radio format these days. God, don’t you love the way the music industry thinks? “Hey, the kids like Korn and Limp Bizkit! We need to drop everything else and concentrate on obnoxious rap-metal crap!” The same thing always happens when some band in some genre meets with unexpected popularity. The music industry declares it a trend and milks it for all it’s worth, with varying degrees of success. It thing happened with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, it happened with Green Day and the Offspring, it happened with Nine Inch Nails, it happened with Matchbox 20, it happened with Prodigy, it happened with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, f’Chrissakes! And now it’s happening again. However, for all my loathing for this latest “trend”, there is one exception. Have you heard that Korn vs. Limp Bizkit “All In the Family” song, which consists of Freddy and Jonny dissing each other and a cheesy techno background? Absolutely hilarious, especially since it neatly encapsulates the way I feel about both bands. Incidentally, I believe Mr. Davis wins that battle of wits hands down. Not that the competition was exactly stiff or anything.
Besides which, it wasn’t Fred Durst, but Limp Bizkit’s DJ Lethal who was in House of Pain with Everlast.
My main musical criticism of Limp Bizkit is Durst. His voice is weak, his lyrics are unoriginal, and he uses virtually identical melodies in every song. The rest of the band, as instrumentalists, actually rock.
I don’t care if a musician had a rough life or whatever. But when idiots like Eminem and Durst talk about how much their lives suck (personally, having millions of dollars at my disposal would make me happy, but hey) and then it turns out the biggest pain of their lives was when Daddy left when they were 17, I tend to think they are full of shit. And it does piss me off when they capitalize on it, like “Oh, I was abused, so I have something meaningful to contribute. Listen to me scream about slapping bitches and hos if ya wanna know what I mean.” That’s fucking bullshit.
I don’t like Limp Bizkit. LOSE THAT GOD DAMNED HAT, WOULD YOU??? The lyrics aren’t the best and Fred Durst delivers them like a first time pizza delivery boy. He’s a little late in coming and, when he realizes he’s fucked up, he pleads for forgiveness. Not literally. That is to say that, when he knows he’s given a weak performance, he tries way too hard the next time and winds up fucking that up worse than the FIRST time. I’m drawing this conclusion from the “Family Values Tour” of 1999. I was at one of the shows and, during “Nookie”, the chorus was really weak the first time around. To compensate this, he became overbearing with the lyrics and wound up sounding really bad.
I don’t mind Korn. Before “Issues” that is. Their self-titled was far from bad. It wasn’t great but it was good. “Life is Peachy” was no better than the first but with a little more varitey. “Follow the Leader” with hits such as “Freak on a Leash” and “All in the Family”, was a HUGE success but, in my opinion, a huge disappointment as well, appealing mostly to the angst ridden teenagers of “Gen-Y” who, for the most part, think this to be Korn’s debut album. (Stupid kids) “Issues” with eMpTyV hits like “Make Me Bad” and “Falling Away From Me” is filled mostly with extremely radio friendly songs, not at all like their previous albums.
Kid Rock is a long-haired pansy and the fact that he used the music from “Sad But True” (that’s it right??) for his “American Badass” song is just pathetic. And he IS the “Jessica Simpson for the latently homosexual crowd” (jayron 32). If you pay close attention, their music styles are the same. (i.e. she used the music from “Jack and Diane” -John (Cougar) Mellancamp(sp?)- for one of her songs.) They are BOTH pathetic and only appealing because of that fact that they look good. But if I hear one more person obsess about how good Kid Rock looks, I’ll lose my damn mind.
I cannot allow this comparison to slide by unchallenged.
Guns N Roses may be cheesy as all hell… yes. In fact, it is suddenly causing me a bit of embarrassment to step forward and defend them…
However! They were a very talented group of people… (Stop snickering!) I’m serious. Slash plays a mean guitar, my friends. Izzy Stradlin’ is also a rather accomplished musician, in my opinion. Axl Rose, while he cannot actually sing very well, did write some thought-provoking and, dare I say it, touching lyrics upon occasion. Matt Sorum was the drummer for the Cult before joining the band, and he seems to know what he’s doing.
Anyway, I could go on, but I will not. Let me just say that Guns N Roses, produced some very good music back in the day, and any comparison to Limp Bizkit is offensive and unnecessary.
Korn has been around for a long time. They built up a huge fan base by touring like rabid dogs. I’ll give 'em credit for that.
As for the Bizkit, I can’t add anything more than what has already been said. But a little story: In Palo Alto last summer there was a skater gang that used to hang around the town. One of them owned a knee length maroon t-shirt that simply said in small white letters on the back, “Limp Bizkit is a Crime.” How true.
I heard on the radio a few weeks ago that Marilyn Manson was dissing Limp Bizkit for being misogynistic. You know you have problems when Marilyn Manson gets on your case.
I’m with you on G ‘n’ R, ReservoirDog, but only in regards to Appetite for Destruction. That album is a must-own for rock-and-roll fans. If the band had pulled a Sex Pistols and gone their separate ways for good after Appetite, they’d be legends. As it is, they’re just tiresome.
Sadly, yes, people find Kid Rock very visually appealing. (retch, gag, hack…) But, from what I’ve seen, the majority of these people are very young girls. Young being the 12-15 age range. Why do they find him good-looking? shrugs Got me. The only thing I can think of is the fact that he’s on MTV and, apparently, most people on MTV are good looking. Watch TRL once. Most the requests that come in say something like this: ‘Hi Carson. Could you please play Kid Rock’s “Only God Knows Why” because it shows the sweeter side of Kid and he IS SOOOOO HOT!!’ (Those exact words were actually on there once. Same goes for the rest of the “Superstars of TRL”: only popular because a bunch of kids think they’re hot.)
Damn, some people take music WAY too seriously. Who cares what the damn message is in music. If you like it, then listen to it. Sure, I like Korn and Limp Bizkit, but i also like dave, PJ, jimmy buffet, moby, hootie, sublime, dr dre, toby keith, eric clapton, roy orbison, ect…so now dont generalize me for SOME music that i like.
Well, yes, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re prostitutes now. Now, I can’t claim to be familiar with Korn’s…shall we say…pre-TRL work, but I trust the testimony of people like Silver_Fire (and some real-life acquaintances whose musical opinions I respect implicitly), who say that their work took a drastic turn a couple of years ago as they began to whore themselves for the 15-year-olds.

You are right and I apologize. Sorry. It’s just that my best friend of 10 years is gay and I put up with people’s bullshit homophobia all the time. I just get upset is all.
I’m sorry. But what I said is still true…that sort of cheap, violent, crude music appeals to the young male population for a reason and only heightens their anger and frustration - Woodstock 99 anyone?
