Walloon, FWIW, there are a number of classic films that are rated ‘G’ by default, it seems, that are more suggestive, or disturbing, than many recent R rated films I’ve seen. Nosferatu, for one. Hell’s Bells, can you imagine what Gigi would be rated, if it were released today?
And it’s worth remembering that what the concern here isn’t for any kind of objective standard, but to protect people from getting in trouble with bosses/supervisors while reading the Dope at work. So, we start with a subjective set of criteria to begin with, then try to accommodate the potential prejudices of Mary Bowlder’s spiritual descendants.
It’s annoying, and it is stupid - but not stupidity on the part of the Dope or the mods.
Movies made before the letter ratings system was instituted in 1968 don’t get default “G” ratings. Each is individually considered. Baby Doll (1956) and Psycho (1960) were rated “R” on reissue.
I’m a big fan of Dame Julie. She’s lovely, elegant, a damned fine actress, and has the greatest set of pipes ever to grace the Broadway stage. For the record, I’m still pissed as hell that she was not chosen to star in the film version of My Fair Lady, though no insult towards the divine Audrey is meant nor should any be implied. I have no intention of getting over it any time soon, BTW.
That being said, however…I don’t find her hot. First of all, there’s the physical element: too skinny and boyish. I prefer women who possess a more generous figure. Secondly, I was raised listening to my mother (who minored in voice) singing along with the original Broadway recording of My Fair Lady. Lusting after the esteemed Ms. Andrews would, in my mind, be too akin to boinking a favorite aunt or old family friend.
