Does anyone have experience with Minoxidil for treatment of hair loss?

A doctor suggested that I get some scalp lotion, which active ingredient is Minoxidil, for treatment of hair loss. As far as I understand, it is some form of steroid. Does any doper have any experience with Minoxidil before?

I have a tiny bald spot, which is easily hidden when my hair is dry, so I’m using Rogaine to keep it from spreading and to also see if I can get rid of it. I’m supposed to use it twice a day, but usually only use it once. It’s seems to work OK. The one thing is though, if it does work for you and grows back hair you have to keep using it because if you quit, the hair will fall out again.

I used minoxidil for about a year - the pure cream, not rogaine, and I can attest that it really does work. The treatment I was using took photos of your crowns so they could track progress over time and it’s really obvious that it does work. Using the cream shouldn’t be in isolation though, you should also be taking propecia which prevents baldness in men. There’s a practical limit to the amount of hair that can be regenerated with minoxidil so the idea is you use it to get as much back as you can and then stop taking it but continue taking the propecia so the hair you have stays.

It wasn’t cheap to take it but I never regretted it for a second.

I used it for a while. All I got from it was very bad dandruff.

I don’t know from experience, but I do know this:

>It works best at keeping what you have vs growing hair.

>It doesn’t work on a receding hairline.

>When it works, it works on the crown (the bald spot prone area at the top/rear of your head).

I investigated it many years ago and the dermatologist told me about the “4-4-40” rule.

If you’ve been losing your hair for less than 4 years and if the spot is less than 4 inches across and if you’re less than 40 years old, then it’s probable that it would work well for you.

Every hair follicle , he explained, has a genetic disposition to stop growing at a certain age. The chemical freaks the hair out so it grows despite the message that it should’ve shut off.

Therefore, if you stop using the product, every follicle will look at its genes and say, “Hey! I shoulda stopped growing 3 years ago.” and, like Nobody says, it’ll all fall out to where it would’ve been had you never used the product.

I went bald instead of buying into a lifetime of use.
