Does anyone here actually like Keanu Reeves as an actor?

Yeah, and I suppose he’s about as far from that as a guy can be and still be a guy!

drop the bear

I loved him in Parenthood. And I’ve liked him in other things. He’s got an interesting look about him, which can keep me interested long after the acting skills fail to.

I forgot he was in River’s Edge. That movie was very interesting and at the time I believe he was still relatively unknown.

Has anyone seen him stage act? From what other posters said here, he seems more than adequate. Like I said, I think he does fine for the rolls he typically gets. I can’t remember seeing him in anything that I absolutely hated him in or where his style of acting actually got on my nerves.

PS. Dropzone, did that sunburn on your butt leave a “kiss” mark? heheheh

I think he’s a pretty good actor. He reminds me of John Wayne.

Now before you boggle, let me explain. John Wayne suffered throughout his career with exactly the same criticisms Reeves has: too wooden, too limited, unexpressive, says his lines in the same intonations.

That’s missing the point. Acting is more than line readings, and Wayne and Reeves are very good at reacting, not acting. They do their acting subtly, not by overemoting. Unfortunately, emoting is considered in some circles to be more the sign of a great actor than subtlety.

Reeves was quite good in “A Walk in the Clouds,” “Speed,” “I Love You to Death,” “Tune in Tomorrow,” “The Matrix,” “Little Buddha,” and “Feeling Minnesota.” He also was smart enough to pass up “Speed 2,” which shows he’s no dummy.

I liked him in Bill and Ted’s. Other than that the best you can hope for is him not fucking up otherwise cool movies (Matrix, Point Break).

Johnny Neumonic makes me want to shoot myself in the head.

Dalovin’ Dj

I think he was pretty good in The Gift. I think someone else could’ve done a great job, but he certainly did a good job.

Yeah, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, and its follow up, Bill and Ted’s Bogs Journey, rock on!! Keanu played Ted.

I loved some of his one liners…

“Dude, remember when she was a senior and we were freshmen and I asked her to the prom…?”

“Here is some money. Take him to the movies, or something.” Just his intonation on that one.

“Uh…Noah’s wife?”

Keanu Reeves is pretty much a mediocre actor who is passable in some movies because women think he is extremely good looking.

He was okay in “Devil’s Advocate”, “The Matrix” and actually pretty good in “Sweet Novemeber”. In “The Gift” he played a pretty scary psycho. It was fun to watch Keanu be cast differently than his usual noir character, but the whole time I could not get past the fact that it was Keanu Reeves, which is not a good sign.

Did anyone mention how horrible he was in “Dangerous Liasons”? I actually kind of felt bad for Keanu in this- he was obviously miscast.

By the way my vote for Hollywood’s worst actor: Ethan Hawke. That guy could not emote if you shoved a pike up his ass.

If emoting is the sign of a good actor, then Johnathan Harris as Dr. Zachary Smith is the greatest actor of them all.

Sometimes what you don’t do as an actor is a sign of how good you are.

Solid! To see a great performance with scant emotion, watch Kevin Costner in No Way Out. Relish while you just watch him think.

Regarding the OP: sure he can’t do accents, sure he oversells his lines, sure his looks have carried him. Sure he’s no Brando. Nevertheless, he’s eked out a very nice career for himself, some hard work of which he can be proud. He’s provided entertainment. Even George Clooney has his Return Of The Killer Tomatoes. Besides, slagging on Keanu Reeves is passé. Very '90s. Try to keep up, lest you become unhip. The current handwringing is about Freddie Prinze, Jr.

i did see “the last time i commited suicide.” goodness, was that a strange role.

So far only one person (Reality Chuck) has mentioned Little Buddha. I remember when news got out that Keanu was Buddha, how much flak that brought upon Bertolucci’s head. He defended his choice by praising the “purity” he found in Keanu’s nature. See, where we see only blankness, it takes a genius director to see purity. No, but really, the role mainly called for keeping an unflappable expression of beatific calm, and Keanu’s up to that.

Pity the delivery was crap. I understand that getting a “name” star for the role attracted more moviegoers, but oh, I would have liked to see an Indian actor in the role. (Or at least Ramon Tikkaram.)

I actually liked Reeves in The Devil’s Advocate and Point Break, and of course the Bill and Ted films and Parenthood, which was much the same character. What I don’t see in his acting is much versatility; when he gets in the right role he’s very good, but in the wrong one he’s excruciating.

You want an versatile actor who does “subtle”? Get Kevin Spacey.
