Does anyone here sleep at night in a recliner instead of in your bed, either routinely or occasionally?

I said woo-adjacent, and that has more to do with some people’s attitude toward it than yoga itself.

Whenever there is some disease in the news, it seems invariable that I’ll see claims that yoga can cure it. I saw it in the 80s for AIDS, and I saw it recently for COVID.

I’ve also seen it for autism and ADHD, and poor vision-- “you can throw away your glasses” sort of thing.

Until you look into a thing, it’s hard to know whether it has something useful, or it’s total BS.

I mean, I’m a vegetarian, for reasons that have nothing to do with health, and I have seen crazy claims for vegetarianism as well-- as well as had people try to “gotcha” me about it by “exposing” such claims.

I’ve learned yoga is the same-- it’s something unto itself, that you can just like, even if people are saying crazy things about it.

But, enough hijack.

Yes, me too. I’ll sleep in it when I sometimes have a cold. I had a horrible respiratory thing this past winter that I couldn’t shake. I slept better in the recliner.

I have ordered a table-clamp model rather than floor-standing, I think it will be better for me. And apparently there are several of those page-turning devices, none of them marketed by Kindle, and they are not all created equal.

I’m really tempted by the idea of an acupressure mat. I’m not sure that one is long enough to reach my hips, which is where I could probably use it the most.

You can scooch it down so that your hips are on it. Position it wherever you need it. You can also lie on your side. Or put it on the floor and sit or stand with your feet on it. It’s a tool to use anyway you think it will be effective for you.

I don’t know this, but I suspect that sleeping in a recliner regularly would make you more susceptible to bedsores because you remain in virtually the same position - with the same pressure points - for hours at a time. There is very limited tossin’ ‘n turnin’ in a recliner as compared to a proper bed.

mmm

Especially if you’re really sedentary during awake hours.

Get a lapdesk and a book holder/stand to put on the minidesk and put your book on that. Works for Kindle and hard copy books just fine. There’s a zillion different ones out there to choose the right one from. Get one with an adjustable slant. Some also are adjustable for height from their base.

My partner purchased a leg elevation pillow set (different heights and adjustments), for help with a knee injury. I tried it recently and it makes your sleeping angle very similar to a recliner, with some pillows behind your head to prop you up if you need them. She has been using it exclusively now, even after recovery. Only drawback for me is that its difficult to sleep on ones side, which is how I sleep. On the plus side, cheap, doesn’t take much room, and can be moved around or put away if not needed.

I just today ordered the floor standing model for my wife, page turner included. I hope both you and she are happy with the choices.

I am not sedentary during my waking hours, and I have never had a problem with bedsores, in spite of the fact that I am pretty much immobile when I sleep.

I’ve got a number of sleep issues, so I’ve had sleep studies, and I have pretty heavy sleep paralysis. Sometimes I wake up still in it, which was horrifying the first time it happened (that I remember). I was a little kid, and thought I was dying.

Anyway, never had a bedsore, or bruise, or anything, not even when camping, or otherwise sleeping on an especially hard surface.

Just chiming in that activity during the day is really important for your circulation at night. I’m not saying your sleep position isn’t important-- I can’t speak to that-- albeit, when I asked my doctor about vaccines before I flew to Costa Rica, at age 52, she did say as general advice, on long flights, when I wasn’t sleeping, I should get up and walk up and down the aisles about every two hours. Costa Rica isn’t a long flight, but I had mentioned my last international flight had been Israel, and that one is about 19 hours.

I’ve never spent the night in my recliner, but I have often napped in it. A bolster pillow works wonders for me on such naps, and is very comfortable.

Sometimes, a ‘change of venue helps’ a comfy couch for instance.

I’m just gonna throw this out there - Aerobed twin. 80 bucks.

I’ve slept on these a lot. Once when I was taking care of my Mother. Once when I had my hip replaced so I didn’t have to use stairs. And now, moving to a new house, waiting for a new bed to be delivered.

They are just great to have around. Good for guests too. That one in the link is a double high so you don’t have to climb up off the ground.

We like them so much we ended up getting a sleep number. More of a full time bed.

The last few years of her life my mom always slept in a recliner. She had a sleeper chair that would lay nearly flat. She said she just couldn’t get comfortable in bed and at least she’d get some sleep in her chair.

Mine arrived today. I love it. The clamp is plastic with a big beefy tightening handle (how many desk lamps do I remember that tightened with a wing nut on a metal ring that mauled the desk), everything works as it should, and the page turner paired up with itself on the first try. I’m finding, in the couple of hours of reading I’ve done since then, that I may still fall asleep from time to time, but it won’t be because my neck is sore and I had to lean my head back, it’s just because the damn chair is so comfortable.

Oh, and thank you very much for the suggestion.

You’re very welcome for the suggestion. My wife is happy with her floor standing holder, but her recliner does not allow the floor plate to go under the chair. We have a work around, but have ordered the clamp on model to see if it’s a better fit. So we may end up with the same thing as yours.

I’m happy I was able to help.

Would one of you please post a link to this holder? Or a picture of yours?

Well, I guess it was inevitable. Once you get a thing in your shopping sights… I’m going to buy this chair for my bedroom in blue tweed. It’s called the “Harbor Town Rocking Recliner,” the same model that my pedicurist has and when I sat in it at the store, I had that same “Ahhhh…” reaction that I do when I sit in hers. They make them to order so it won’t be here until October, which is just in time for my (choke) 77th birthday. BTW, La-Z-boy is having a 25% off sale this Friday and over Labor Day Weekend. This chair will be $1,000, which I think is pretty reasonable.

This is the one I got (clamps to table or headboard).

I recant, tentatively, my love. It seems the page turner is having trouble holding a charge. I left it plugged in all night last night, and it worked for a while, but when I stepped away and let the Kindle go to sleep, the page turner did not come back on, and pairing it again did nothing. So I am plugging in again, to see if it goes any better the next time.

I don’t know if we have the same page turner, but the one we have needs to be turned on with a switch on the back if it’s not been used for an hour or so.

This is the one I have. Same as Roderick_Femm’s except mine has a weighted base and vertical post. However, because of the way my wife’s recliner is made the plate cannot be placed in the correct position. So one like Roderick_Femm’s is arriving tomorrow.
