Does anyone know about antique trunks and chests?

I’ve got a very old wooden trunk and I’m trying to date it. It’s hump backed and has four wooden slats across the lid vertically. It’s covered in, I assume, tin. On the inside is a fairly small litho of chicks.

It6’s pretty beat up so I’m not really interested in the value.

Thanks!

Sorry - the closest I get to antique chests is when my wife and I go to bed at night.

This was the common style thruout the mid to late 19th century. With the addition of lithograph I’d say late 19th century (1890’s).

Yeah, anything from about the 1870s to the 1930s. We’ve got three or four of those and they were made for quite a while.

Nice trunks, though. I picked up our most recent one a few weeks ago for about $80.

Wait - chicks, or chicks?

Okay. that’s about as close as I got too. I know I saw a website that said the chick/duckling thing was fairly common 1870-90 but I can’t find it now.

CHICKENS, you perv!

In his defense I will say that trunks with litographs of young girls under the lid are very common to find. I have a small wooden trunk with alligator skin that has two magnificant litographs of cute young “American Girl” themed lithos glued to the underside of the lid.

I keep my copies of Playboy in there.
