Does anyone know how Yelp works?

Specifically, what criteria does yelp use to rank the business listings on their site, does anyone know?

I’ve added our new deli to the site, but when I do a search for deli’s in our town, it is nowhere near the top of the list. Even deli’s outside of our town are above ours.

We only have two reviews so far, so I thought maybe that was the issue, but then I noticed that another place with no reviews came up before ours too. So it seems that’s not it.

Anyone know?

I’ve heard rumors that Yelp! will ask you to pay for advertising on their site in order for your reviews to show up.

I just know it from a consumer point of view, but the app on the phone you try to post won’t be the actual review. They make you go home to your real computer and edit it. That has stopped me from doing many reviews.

According to this site, if you don’t pay for Yelp ads then they will rank paying businesses higher on searches, and advertise for competitors on your Yelp page. If you do pay, then you’ll rank higher in search results and be advertised on your competitors’ pages. But at least they stopped removing negative reviews in exchange for money (a.k.a. back-room bribery), although it took several lawsuits to stop that practice.

It might be worth a minor investment, if you can afford it.

Thanks you guys. I appreciate the help.
