I am wondering if anyone knows the title of an older piece of computer-generated art that I first recall seeing almost twenty years ago. The piece of artwork in question shows what appears at first glance to be a view of the Earth taken from the surface of the moon. However, upon closer inspection, the “Earth” in the picture bears no resemblance to our own: the landmasses upon its surface being completely different from the continents on our own world. I think the name of the picture was “Memoir (or souvenir) of a space mission that never was”, but I can’t be any more specific than that. (I also think the picture had something to do with fractals, but I don’t recall what it was, if that was indeed the case.) Does anyone know the name of this picture, who its creator was, and if there are any sites on the Net that have a copy of it on display?
Without more information, it will be extremely difficult to find this piece due to the common nature of these types of images. Admittedly, they were not as common twenty years ago, but that fact that they are so common today makes searching very difficult.
FWIW, there is a fun little application called Universe Image Creator that can generate these types of images with the click of a button.
